Key Takeaways
Bitcoin is struggling to reclaim $80,000 as record paper profits among short-term whales raise the risk of fresh selling pressure.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly styled himself as the “crypto president”, faces renewed calls from political critics to invoke the 25th Amendment following an extraordinary burst of AI-generated Truth Social posts.
The two developments are not directly connected, but their timing illustrates the unusual mix of market and political uncertainty surrounding Bitcoin as it consolidates near a closely watched psychological threshold.

Bitcoin traded near $79,300 at the time of writing, down approximately 1.2% over 24 hours and still struggling to establish support above $80,000.
Unrealized profits held by short-term whale investors reached a record $9.07 billion on Sept. 4. The reading marked the highest level in data extending back to 2016.
The figure subsequently declined to $7.51 billion as Bitcoin retreated, but remained among the five largest readings ever recorded. All five occurred during the past two weeks, highlighting how quickly profitability increased among large investors who acquired their coins relatively recently.
Something interesting is happening with Bitcoin’s largest entities.
When we segment addresses by BTC holdings, we can see very different behavior across the ranges typically associated with large holders and whales.

Large unrealized gains do not guarantee that whales will sell. However, they represent potential supply that could enter the market if Bitcoin loses momentum.
“Unrealized profit at that scale is exposure,” IT Tech said, noting that short-term whales have historically moved quickly to secure gains when prices weaken.
The setup leaves Bitcoin caught between a relatively solid cost-basis floor and a growing incentive for profitable holders to cash out.
Bitcoin.com reported that immediate support had formed around $79,000, with the $76,300-$77,000 region becoming relevant if that level fails.
Older Bitcoin investors are also becoming more active.
CryptoQuant said the 90-day moving average of spent transaction outputs from wallets holding Bitcoin for more than five years had risen to 1,500 BTC. That is roughly double the average recorded in May.
Bitcoin’s Market Structure Improves, but Spot Demand Still Needs to Confirm the Breakout
“The key test is clear: can spot demand absorb supply and push BTC decisively through $82,000–$83,000” – By @xwinfinance pic.twitter.com/tgtLSaLaua
— CryptoQuant.com (@cryptoquant_com) September 8, 2026
The increase suggests that the consolidation has prompted even long-term investors to move more coins on-chain. However, those transfers do not necessarily represent sales.
Some holders may have moved Bitcoin between wallets or upgraded their custody arrangements following recent security concerns.
Without corresponding exchange-inflow data, increased activity alone cannot establish that veteran investors are exiting.
Nevertheless, the combination of record short-term whale profits and rising long-term-holder activity adds pressure around $80,000, where Bitcoin has repeatedly struggled to sustain momentum.
Away from the markets, Trump sparked controversy after posting dozens of AI-generated images and videos on Truth Social.
The posts reportedly depicted scenarios such as Trump meeting George Washington, confronting foreign leaders, and appearing in military- or superhero-themed scenes.
Critics, including Call to Activism, Republicans Against Trump, and progressive influencer Harry Sisson, called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked.
Similar criticism also came from Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, although no member of his administration appears to have initiated the constitutional process. Coverage of the posting spree described roughly 40 AI-generated posts across two days.
The 80-year-old president is facing calls to be removed from office via the 25th Amendment after he spent an entire day posting deranged AI-generated slop on Truth Social.

Invoking the amendment would require Vice President JD Vance and a majority of the Cabinet to declare Trump unable to perform his duties. If Trump challenged that finding, two-thirds of both chambers of Congress would need to uphold it, making removal highly unlikely.
For Bitcoin, the immediate battle remains technical rather than political. But with whales sitting on historic gains and Washington producing another burst of uncertainty, the fight for $80,000 is unfolding against an increasingly volatile backdrop.
Giuseppe Ciccomascolo began his career as an investigative journalist in Italy, where he contributed to both local and national newspapers, focusing on various financial sectors.
Upon relocating to London, he worked as an analyst for Fitch's CapitalStructure and later as a Senior Reporter for Alliance News. In 2017, Giuseppe transitioned to covering cryptocurrency-related news, producing documentaries and articles on Bitcoin and other emerging digital currencies. He also played a pivotal role in establishing the academy for a cryptocurrency exchange website. Crypto remained his primary area of interest throughout his tenure as a writer for ThirdFloor.
