Key Takeaways

  • Despite a market recovery, crypto companies are adding jobs with more caution than the previous boom.
  • Major exchanges are hiring, along with Wall Street entering the space.
  • Job listings haven’t fully bounced back to pre-crash levels, but there’s a surge in job seekers due to the bull market.

With the recovery of the digital-asset market, crypto companies have started to hire once again, albeit with more caution compared to the fervor seen during the previous crypto boom.

Among these, Coinbase Global Inc., having recently achieved profitability, is seeking to hire for 200 positions  across the globe.

Crypto Jobs Booming Again: Coinbase, Kraken Lead Hiring Surge

However, it’s more than Coinbase that is hiring. Competing exchanges like Kraken , Binance , and Gemini  are also on a hiring spree alongside traditional firms like Fidelity, which have increased their involvement in the crypto sector. Thanks to an uptick in the ability to raise funding, many crypto startups find themselves in a position to expand their teams.

This renewed capacity for hiring is reflected in the booming activity on specialized job boards catering to the crypto industry, indicating a surge in demand for talent in this space.

CryptocurrencyJobs.co reported  a significant uptick in job postings within the industry, noting a 50% year-over-year increase between January and February and an additional 45% rise in March. CryptoJobsList observed nearly double the number of job ads in March compared to the same period last year.

Moreover, the Blockchain Association, representing over 100 major companies in the sector, is listing more than 1,700 job postings , a substantial increase from fewer than 1,000 a year ago. This current growth, however, still falls short of the peak during the 2021 bull market when over 3,000 ads were listed.

According to  Dan Spuller, senior director of industry affairs at the company, which started seeing a significant rise at the end of last year:

“Things are turning around. I would predict the rest of this year and certainly next year are going to be very strong. Our industry is unique, it correlates often with the overall market.”

Bitcoin Hits New Highs, Triggers Crypto Trading Surge

Bitcoin, a leading indicator for the cryptocurrency industry, achieved multiple all-time highs this month, marking over a 50% increase in value since January.

This surge is driving a boost in activity across cryptocurrency exchanges, with retail investors re-entering the market, attracted by the potential for substantial returns. In line with this market upturn, Coinbase’s shares  reached a 52-week high, hovering around $265 at the time of writing.

Pranesh Anthapur, Kraken’s chief people officer, commented :

“Kraken has successfully navigated several bull and bear markets while remaining prepared to scale around true inflection moments. The recent surge in crypto markets reinforces our existing thesis that 2024 is the right time to grow in order to meet the demand ahead of us.”

The exchange is actively seeking candidates for over 100 positions, as listed on its job site and over 290 positions according to LinkedIn .

Binance is also on the lookout to hire more than 100 individuals, primarily analysts and engineers, according to LinkedIn  and its official page. In fact, CZ is also recruiting for his newly established educational startup platform.

BlackRock, Fidelity Join Hiring Surge in Booming Market

Fidelity is on the hunt for candidates  to fill 22 crypto-related roles, such as a digital assets trader and a vice president of crypto investment risk. BlackRock Inc. , the largest asset manager globally, introduced a Bitcoin-focused exchange-traded fund in January, and it has referenced digital assets in numerous job postings. This includes a notable position for a vice president of digital assets and ETF legal counsel.

According to  Spuller from the Blockchain Association, business development positions, which were among the first to be cut during the previous market downturn, are now seeing a resurgence in hiring.

Numerous companies currently expanding their teams, including Coinbase, experienced at least one wave of layoffs  in the last two years due to the crypto market downturn, and they have committed to avoiding excessive hiring in the future. Alesia Haas, Coinbase’s Chief Financial Officer, mentioned  in a February interview that the company is considering a moderate increase in its workforce for 2024.

Crypto Job Market Lags Behind Bullish Trends

After several years of declining prices and the collapse of major crypto businesses like Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX exchange and lending firms Genesis and Celsius Network, the job market in the crypto sector remains uneven. Job platforms Indeed and LinkedIn report that their listings for crypto-related positions are still below the levels seen a year ago.

However, there’s definitely no lack of interest in these openings, some of which offer the option to be compensated in cryptocurrency.

Daniel Adler, the founder of Cryptocurrency Jobs, notes  a significant influx of talent seeking employment in the sector, spurred by the recent bull market. Consequently, many job postings on the site are attracting hundreds of applicants, indicating that it is currently very much an employer’s market.
