According to sources that spoke to media outlet Respawn First, the PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 will be compatible with Sony’s upcoming next-generation PlayStation 5.
DualShock 4 “Fully Compatible” With PlayStation 5
Respawn First reports that a duo of developers currently in possession of PS5 devkits confirmed that the DualShock 4 is “fully compatible” with the PlayStation 5. It’s unclear which studios provided the nugget. With quite a few developers already developing PS5 games, the scope is rather broad.
The suggestion is that through the PlayStation 5’s purported backward compatibility features, the DualShock 4 will be viable with the new hardware and operating system.
As of writing, Sony’s backward compatibility plans are unclear. The consensus is that PlayStation 4 titles will work on the new console. There’s even speculation that Sony is planning to have the entire back catalog of titles as far back as the original PlayStation playable.
The DualShock 4 will reportedly be compatible with PlayStation 4 games. As Respawn First points out, it’s unclear whether PlayStation 5 titles will work exclusively with the DualShock 5 or both controllers.
The news appears to back up speculation that a leaked image of the PS5 devkit that surfaced in October featured a DualShock 4 connected to the development model.
As for the DualShock 5 controller, the latest tip suggests Sony is gearing up for a reveal during Q1 2020; it will occur alongside an official reveal of the PlayStation 5 during a PlayStation Meeting 2020 show in February. At this point, this exists as a rumor and must be taken with an appropriate amount of salt.
Patents published in Japan in October appear to show the design of the DualShock 5, with the only noticeable difference to the existing DualShock 4 the addition of four new rear-mounted buttons
