Epic Games sometimes get unfairly treated by the gaming community. This time, the backlash is deserved. In a recent blog post, they announced that Fortnite: Save the World was being abandoned .
The game mode was supposed to go free-to-play for years. Now it is remaining a ‘premium experience.’ Despite this, updates are slowing down. On top of that, cosmetics are going to start drying up too.
People are annoyed about this, and it’s not exactly hard to see why.
The biggest issue with this update is that it’s a broken promise. For years, we were told that Fortnite Save the World would be free-to-play eventually.
I know plenty of people who were excited to try it out but weren’t willing to pay upfront on the off chance they didn’t like it. Now, none of those same people are still interested in the game.
That’s the real reason that Fortnite Save the World will die. Free-to-play games have much more chance of survival than premium ones. Epic Games will use this as an excuse to stop supporting the game entirely.
Another reason that people are annoyed about Fortnite Save the World is the new ‘Ventures’ feature. All of the content that’s already in the game will be continuously recycled.
Each season, the content will be cycled in-and-out. This will happen on a different schedule to the multiplayer component of Fortnite. Essentially what this is, is a way to reuse the same content over and over again.
Not only is this incredibly lazy, but it’s kicking Fortnite Save the World fans while they’re down. Not only will they be getting less new content, but it’ll be continuously recycled in-and-out of usage, forever.
Epic Games are pulling an idiotic move here. They’ve been trying to claw their reputation out of the gutter over the past few years. They’d been doing a decent job of it too, until now.
It seems clear by checking Twitter that there are plenty of people annoyed at this decision. People feel like they’ve been lied to, mainly because they have been.
It’s not like Epic Games can’t afford to make Save the World as a free-to-play variant. They have the cash to bankroll plenty of free games. This just feels like an incredibly stupid decision from a company trying to win people over.
