On the outside, Ellen DeGeneres looks like the undisputed queen of the talk show genre.
Her show has been on air since 2003, providing fans with family-friendly entertainment… at least, that’s what she wants us to think. But all that glitters isn’t gold. In Ellen’s case, it’s not even knock-off silver. It’s just faded brass.
Ellen has been plagued by rumors for years, but most of us have shrugged it off. After all, what celebrity hasn’t faced accusations of bad behavior over the course of their career , right? But this year, these tales are starting to look less like tabloid fodder and more like a shocking reality.
Back in March, Kevin T. Porter broke out a big ol’ spoon to stir the pot. He took to Twitter, asking the world to send in their worst stories about Ellen.
Ellen’s Former Staffer Weighs In
As you might expect, the world went wild, and Porter was inundated with replies. While there were undoubtedly some fake ones thrown into the mix, there was a trending pattern.
At the same time, YouTube star Nikki de Jager made some interesting comments about her time on the show. According to the make-up whizz, her experience left a lot to be desired.
Call me naive, but I kind of expected to be welcomed with confetti cannons. ‘Welcome to The Ellen DeGeneres Show!’ But instead, I was greeted by an angry intern who was a bit overworked…I was expecting a Disney show, but got Teletubbies after dark.
The coincidental timing of this interview certainly didn’t help Ellen’s cause. And one of the star’s former staffers just spilled the tea by telling the New York Post:
Is she always nice? No. It irritates me that people think she’s all sweetness and light and she gets away with it.

The Pattern of Abuse
Kevin T. Porter may have fanned the flames, but he didn’t start the fire. Ellen’s track record stems back years.
Back in 2007 during the big writer’s strike, Ellen double-crossed her staff and crossed the picket line . She halted filming for one day, before returning to business as usual. This proved that when it comes to backing her staff, DeGeneres couldn’t give a rat’s behind.
Naturally, writers – who are the very core of The Ellen DeGeneres Show – were miffed.
Since then, the tales of her abusive behavior toward staff have multiplied. Each story uncovers a pattern of systematic abuse. Crew members and guests say that her manner is cold, abrasive – even aggressive. Some reveal they were instructed not to look Ellen in the eye.
In May, a former security guard for DeGeneres came forward to share his own story. Tom Majercak had a lot to say.
Ellen is the one person that I’ve been assigned to – and I’ve been assigned to quite a few celebrities – that has never taken the time to say hi to me…It was very cold and it was very sly and it was actually demeaning in the way that she treats people other than those who are in her circle.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. While humanity is battling to get through this global pandemic and spreading messages of kindness, Ellen shafted her crew.
In a truly Machiavellian move, the host – who has a net worth of roughly $330 million – reduced pay for staff by up to 60% . Instead of supporting them, Ellen hired an entirely new production team for the quarantine episodes of her show.
From her feud with Kathy Griffin to her support of Kevin Hart during his homophobia scandal, the list goes on and on (and on). It begs the question: Why is a woman like this still one of Hollywood’s biggest names?
Ellen Wouldn’t Be Working If She Were a Man
Given the wave of Time’s Up and the other movements that have rocked Hollywood in recent years, Ellen’s abusive behavior seems unchecked. Yes, it’s not of a sexual nature, but does that mean that it’s okay? If a man were treating his staff as badly as this, would he still be applauded? It’s doubtful.
In the fight for equality, a double standard is being set. Until we start to recognize that women can be power-hungry monsters too, how will the playing field ever be leveled? When will we wake up and stop lining the pockets of people who appear shiny on the surface but are rotten to the core?
If Harvey Weinstein’s fall taught us anything, it’s that the cult of silence around iconic figures is dangerous. Are their crimes the same? Absolutely not. But make no mistake, Ellen is a wolf dressed in sheep’s clothing.
