ROCKFISH Games open-world space shooter RPG, Everspace 2, has hit its Kickstarter goal of raising 450,000€ despite the crowdfunding initiative not ending until later today.
Everspace 2 is a sequel to 2017’s acclaimed Everspace. The original was lauded across the board for its fast and fun take on space combat marrying roguelike elements and stunning visuals.
Off the merit of the original, ROCKFISH Games launched a Kickstarter campaign in early October, hoping to raise half a million euros for development. As of writing, the campaign has blown past that initial milestone thanks to contributions from over 7,500 backers.
Everspace 2 taps into the fast-paced single-player combat of the original. But, ports it to a persistent open-world setting where RPG elements and deep exploration are brought to the forefront. ROCKFISH Games describes it as follows;
Imagine a Hack & Slash Action-RPG with all the bells and whistles: classes, random loot, skills, talents, and more… but in space. Your ship is the hero in this adventure. Expand your private ship collection from a virtually endless supply of vessels composed of three main classes with several sub-classes and optimize your build to perfection. Cleverly combine modules, weapons, devices, and perks to fit your individual playstyle and the current objective.
The developer promises an engaging 20-hour sci-fi campaign and side missions. Alongside redesigned AI, loot, and hundreds of intricate celestial locations such as space stations, planets, and capital ships. These range from procedural-generated to level-based locations. And, each one has their own brand of challenges, puzzles, aliens, and NPCs.
The decision to once again use Kickstarter to fund development may be at odds with the success of the original (not all campaigns can boast such a happy ending). Rave reviews and steady sales should, in theory, have financed a sequel.
The developer points out that the decision was motivated primarily by a desire to have backers on-board from the get-go. Feedback from fans proved invaluable to shaping Everspace into a success.
Speaking of early backers, ROCKFISH Games says;
They really helped us to iron out major flaws, bring great new ideas into the game, and release a polished Alpha version in Steam Early Access.
