Key Takeaways

  • WLFI says a subset of user wallets was compromised during its September token launch.
  • Impacted users were required to undergo KYC re-verification before funds could be reallocated.
  • Justin Sun’s wallet was also frozen at the time due to “irregular activity.”

Donald Trump-backed DeFi project, World Liberty Financial (WLFI), has revealed that a security incident shadowed its September token launch, forcing the team to freeze a number of user wallets and delay withdrawals for weeks.

WLFI now states that it has completed re-verification for users who reported compromised accounts, clearing the way for fund reallocation.

However, with the token down by more than 50% since its launch, the episode has raised new questions about security, communication, and what exactly happened behind the scenes.

WLFI Froze Wallets as Phishing Attacks Surfaced

According to the platform, the wallets that were drained or displayed suspicious activity had been compromised before interacting with WLFI—primarily through phishing attacks or exposed seed phrases.

The team stressed that the breach did not originate from its smart contracts or platform infrastructure.

To prevent further losses, WLFI froze affected wallets and required users to complete KYC verification to prove ownership before linking a new wallet.

“In September, we froze impacted wallets and verified ownership to ensure a smooth transition,” the team said, noting that the process took longer than users expected because fund security was prioritized over speed.

While verification dragged on for weeks, WLFI said it was simultaneously testing new smart-contract logic to migrate funds in bulk while maintaining regulatory compliance.

The project confirmed that all users who completed verification will begin receiving their reallocated funds, while wallets belonging to customers who have not come forward will remain locked until they complete the required steps.

Was Justin Sun’s Wallet Freeze Part of the Same Issue?

The September incident coincided with a now-famous moment.

Tron founder Justin Sun publicly complained that his WLFI wallet—containing millions of dollars—had been frozen.

At the time, WLFI staff cited “irregular activity,” but did not link the freeze to a broader wallet compromise or phishing wave.

Their new statement still does not mention Sun by name, but the timing suggests his freeze may have been part of the same precautionary sweep.

Sun rejected social media claims that he intended to dump WLFI tokens, saying he was only testing platform features with a small amount.

The freeze contributed to speculation and volatility in the weeks after launch.

Token Down 50% as WLFI Attempts Reset

WLFI’s debut was one of the most highly anticipated token launches of the year, boosted by branding ties to Trump and attention from major crypto figures.

But the wallet freeze, extended delays, and price collapse have frustrated early adopters.

Whether the breach was ultimately caused by user-side security failures or broader systemic issues, WLFI’s next challenge is restoring confidence as it pushes ahead with its roadmap.
