Global Pay Connect Enters XRP Territory as Chainlink Powers 600 Bank Onchain Payments Push

Key Takeaways

  • Bottomline has launched Global Pay Connect, giving its network of more than 600 banks access to blockchain payment rails via Chainlink.
  • Bottomline processes more than $16 trillion in payments annually, but that figure represents its existing infrastructure—not money already moving onchain.
  • The model enters territory long associated with Ripple and XRP: connecting banks, existing payment infrastructure, and blockchain-based settlement.

Chainlink is moving deeper into institutional payments as Bottomline launches Global Pay Connect, a platform designed to connect more than 600 banks with blockchain networks without forcing them to abandon their existing payment infrastructure.

The scale behind the launch is substantial.

Bottomline is a top-three Swift service provider and says its platforms move more than $16 trillion in payments annually.

Global Pay Connect adds blockchain connectivity to that existing infrastructure through Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP).

Banks can continue using established systems and messaging standards such as SWIFT and ISO 20022, while gaining a route to emerging onchain payment networks.

That puts Chainlink closer to a market Ripple has spent years pursuing.

Chainlink Moves Into Bank Payment Infrastructure

Global Pay Connect isn’t asking banks to replace SWIFT with a blockchain.

Instead, Chainlink acts as an interoperability layer between the two worlds.

CCIP provides a network-agnostic connection to different blockchains, while the Chainlink Runtime Environment coordinates workflows spanning traditional systems and onchain networks.

Bottomline’s platform also supports major payment rails including SEPA, CHAPS, Bacs, CHIPS, SIC and Lynx, alongside SWIFT. It combines that connectivity with fraud controls, payment data enrichment, and AI-enabled insights.

“As a top-three Swift service provider, Bottomline provides critical payment connectivity to the world’s largest financial institutions,” Chainlink Labs Chief Business Officer Johann Eid said, adding that the integration gives institutions access to onchain rails through a single connection.

The approach tackles one of banks’ biggest blockchain headaches: integrating with multiple networks separately.

Bottomline’s own research found that 40% of CFOs identify outdated infrastructure as the biggest barrier to real-time payment adoption, while only 28% describe their institutions’ SaaS infrastructure as modern, API-enabled, and end-to-end.

Is Chainlink Moving Into XRP’s Territory?

The overlap with Ripple is difficult to ignore, although the technologies are not identical.

Ripple has historically positioned its payments infrastructure — and, where used, XRP — as a way for financial institutions to move value across borders. Chainlink is approaching the problem from another angle: providing an interoperability and orchestration layer that enables existing financial infrastructure to communicate with multiple blockchains.

Global Pay Connect is explicitly network-agnostic, meaning banks aren’t being pushed toward a single blockchain or settlement asset.

That is an important distinction from the XRP narrative. Chainlink’s announcement does not say LINK will become a bridge currency for the banks, nor does it establish that 600 banks are already settling transactions onchain.

Instead, Bottomline is giving its banking network the infrastructure to access blockchain payment rails. The company has not disclosed how many of its more than 600 banking customers will initially activate those capabilities or how much payment volume will move onchain.

The $16 trillion figure also needs context: it is the annual payment volume already moving across Bottomline’s broader platforms, not $16 trillion migrating to Chainlink.

Still, the launch expands the competition over a much bigger prize.

The race is no longer simply about whether banks will use blockchain. Increasingly, it is about which infrastructure will connect their existing payment systems to it.
