a16z Just Quietly Ditched “Crypto” From Its Flagship Fund: Here’s What It’s Betting On Instead

Published 23 October 2026

Key Takeaways

  • a16z Crypto is becoming a16z Frontier, widening its investment focus beyond blockchain.
  • AI, autonomous machines and new computing devices are among the technologies it plans to back.
  • The expansion follows its $2.2 billion fifth crypto fund, announced in May.

Andreessen Horowitz is dropping “Crypto” from the name of its digital asset investment business, expanding one of blockchain’s biggest venture franchises into a broader bet on emerging technologies.

The new identity, a16z Frontier, comes with an investment remit stretching into artificial intelligence, autonomous machines and other technologies whose markets could take years to develop.

The firm also announced that Chris Dixon is continuing to lead the strategy.

For an investor associated with Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap, the shift is significant. But the announcement also preserves a role for blockchain: a16z says crypto investing and its advocacy for sensible regulation will continue.

What a16z Frontier Is Betting On

Dixon’s central argument is that technological categories are becoming less useful as investment boundaries.

As banks and fintech businesses incorporate blockchains into ordinary products, identifying every company by its underlying infrastructure becomes less meaningful.

Frontier will instead pursue companies creating new capabilities and markets, including AI applications that move beyond making existing tasks faster or cheaper.

Dixon highlighted autonomous machines, advances in biology and medicine, and businesses combining software, hardware and services. He also pointed to networks where people and intelligent agents coordinate and transact.

The approach draws on his earlier investments in Oculus, Skydio and Zipline, which emerged from improvements in cameras, sensors and chips driven by smartphones. His expectation is that AI could support another generation of devices and businesses.

That gives founders a wider opening: a company’s potential can matter more than whether it fits an established crypto category.

A $2.2 Billion Fund Behind the Broader Strategy

The expansion follows a substantial fundraising round earlier this year. On May 5, a16z announced Crypto Fund 5, a $2.2 billion vehicle focused on translating blockchain infrastructure into products people use regularly.

Its five crypto funds have raised roughly $9.8 billion collectively. The latest vehicle is smaller than the $4.5 billion fund announced in 2022, although the firm previously said shorter fundraising cycles would help it respond to changing opportunities.

The May investment thesis already contained a bridge to AI. It described software agents purchasing computing resources, data and services on users’ behalf, alongside stablecoins, tokenized assets and financial networks.

It also emphasized adoption over speculation: payments, savings and financial services that remain useful through changing token prices. Those priorities help explain how the broader strategy connects with the fund’s original pitch.

For crypto founders, the practical implication is a broader pool of companies potentially competing for attention within the strategy.

The announcement does not specify how future investments will be divided between blockchain businesses and other technologies.

Ali Yahya’s Departure Adds Another AI Connection

The rebrand coincides with the departure of general partner Ali Yahya, an early member of a16z’s crypto team.

Yahya said he plans to start a company and is exploring infrastructure supporting an open software ecosystem, according to RootData’s account of his announcement.

His interests include networks connecting multiple people and AI agents, alongside changes to software development as applications become cheaper to create.

He described the project as being at an early stage.

Meanwhile, Dixon will lead Frontier alongside Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The group’s existing bets include Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap.

The investment question now extends beyond which blockchain wins: it includes which new businesses become possible as AI, programmable money and computing devices develop together.
