Zcash Privacy Breakthrough? New Proposal Shields ZEC Swap History

Key Takeaways

  • Zcash developer Zakura has proposed a privacy safeguard to protect ZEC swaps through NEAR Intents against potential future quantum attacks.
  • The design assigns a separate viewing key to each swap, preventing one compromised address from exposing an entire wallet’s incoming payment history.
  • The proposal requires no Zcash network upgrade, while NEAR reports more than $1.5 billion in cumulative ZEC trading volume through Intents.

Zcash developers are working on a new privacy feature designed to prevent future quantum computers from uncovering users’ cryptocurrency transaction histories.

On Oct. 18, infrastructure developer Zakura introduced a proposal to assign a unique incoming viewing key to every ZEC swap conducted via NEAR Intents.

The approach addresses a potential weakness in cross-chain transactions, where publicly recorded refund addresses could eventually expose information about otherwise private Zcash payments.

The proposal remains under review and has not yet been deployed.

How NEAR Intents Could Expose Private Zcash Transactions

Zcash uses shielded transactions to conceal sensitive payment information, including recipient details and transferred amounts.

However, NEAR Intents introduce an additional consideration.

When users exchange ZEC for another cryptocurrency, a shielded refund address is recorded on NEAR’s public blockchain. That address remains visible even when the transaction succeeds without requiring a refund.

Multiple addresses generated by the same Zcash account can share an incoming viewing key.

According to Zakura, a sufficiently powerful future quantum computer could theoretically recover that key from a published address, potentially revealing incoming payments associated with the account.

Importantly, the vulnerability is theoretical. No existing quantum computer has demonstrated the ability to carry out such an attack against Zcash.

Zcash Proposes One Viewing Key Per Swap

Zakura’s proposed solution separates viewing access across individual transactions.

Instead of relying on one incoming viewing key for multiple addresses, each swap would receive a distinct key.

Consequently, compromising a single publicly exposed address would reveal only payments associated with that address, rather than the wallet’s broader incoming transaction history.

Users would retain control of their spending keys, meaning the proposed change would not require separate accounts for every swap. The design also incorporates private information retrieval, allowing wallets to identify relevant refund transactions without revealing the addresses they query to database operators.

Zakura expects compatible software wallets to potentially integrate the feature within weeks, although hardware wallets would require additional support.

Why Zcash’s $1.5B NEAR Intents Activity Matters

The proposal arrives as Zcash becomes increasingly integrated with cross-chain trading infrastructure.

NEAR reported in July that more than $1.5 billion in cumulative ZEC volume had moved through NEAR Intents, highlighting growing demand for interoperability involving privacy-focused assets.

That adoption also increases the importance of protecting information exposed when private transactions interact with public blockchains.

Zakura’s initiative forms part of broader preparations for quantum-resistant cryptography, including work associated with Project Tachyon.

However, the proposed wallet safeguard is not a complete quantum-security solution. Its effectiveness will depend on implementation, wallet adoption, and the development of wider cryptographic protections.

For Zcash, the immediate significance is addressing a potential privacy weakness before quantum computing makes it exploitable.
