Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken suffered an hour-long connectivity outage that disrupted spot and derivatives trading, leaving some users unable to access their accounts or manage open positions.

The incident began at approximately 02:42 UTC, affecting several of the exchange’s trading interfaces, including the REST API, WebSocket, and FIX connections.

Kraken Confirms Spot and Derivatives Trading Disruption

According to Kraken’s official incident history, the exchange began investigating connectivity and order-submission problems at 02:42 UTC on Oct. 30.

The disruption affected web and mobile applications, as well as REST, WebSocket, and FIX connections used by professional traders and automated trading systems.

At 02:55 UTC, Kraken confirmed that its investigation was continuing. The incident was marked resolved at 03:42 UTC, exactly one hour after the initial notice.

Kraken did not disclose the technical cause, the number of affected customers, or the volume of unsuccessful orders.

Why an Hour-Long Outage Can Hurt Crypto Traders

For traders, losing access to an exchange during volatile markets can create financial exposure even when customer assets remain secure.

Spot traders may miss opportunities to buy or sell, while derivatives traders can face greater risks if they cannot adjust leveraged positions.

Automated strategies are particularly sensitive to API disruptions because they depend on continuous market data and order execution.

Kraken’s incident report confirmed problems with order submission but did not establish whether customers suffered losses or whether any positions were liquidated due to the outage.

The disruption followed other recent operational problems. Kraken reported Bitcoin funding delays on Oct. 26 and Solana deposit and withdrawal delays on Oct. 23.

Unverified $130M Aave Exposure Claims Add to Concerns

The outage also coincided with speculation about Kraken’s exposure to the decentralized lending protocol Aave.

Online reports circulated an unverified figure exceeding $130 million, with some commentators questioning whether the exchange could face liquidity pressure.

However, no evidence has established a connection between the alleged Aave exposure and Kraken’s connectivity failure. Nor has a liquidity shortage been confirmed.

Kraken’s official notice described an operational incident, not a solvency problem.

The exchange’s restoration of service ended the immediate disruption, but questions remain about its cause and whether affected customers experienced financial losses.

For traders, the episode highlights a familiar risk of centralized exchanges: holding cryptocurrency on a platform does not guarantee uninterrupted access to trade it when markets move.
