Key Takeaways

  • XRP’s top 10 known holders control roughly 64% of the cryptocurrency’s total supply, according to XRPSCAN.
  • Ripple dominates with nearly 40%, largely because the calculation includes 35.7 billion XRP held in escrow.
  • Exchanges including UPbit, Coinbase, Binance, Bithumb, Uphold, and Bitbank collectively account for billions of XRP, although much of it belongs to customers.

XRP ownership remains heavily concentrated in 2026, with Ripple, major crypto exchanges and early XRP figures controlling some of the largest identified holdings.

XRPSCAN data as of Sept. 9 shows that the 10 largest known entities collectively account for approximately 64.1% of XRP’s total supply. Ripple alone accounts for nearly 40%, while exchanges such as UPbit, Coinbase, and Binance collectively custody billions of tokens.

However, this does not mean these entities directly own or can freely use all of that XRP. Exchange balances largely represent tokens held in custody for customers, while most of Ripple’s share is locked in escrow.

The XRP Ledger has a maximum supply of 100 billion XRP. Approximately 68.13 billion XRP is currently circulating, while another 31.85 billion remains escrowed. Around 14.38 million XRP has been permanently burned.

XRP’s Top 10 Holders in 2026

XRPSCAN groups accounts linked to the same known entity, which is important when interpreting the ranking. Ripple, for example, is represented by 31 accounts. Its 39.95% share consists overwhelmingly of escrowed XRP rather than immediately available tokens.

Rank Holder Accounts XRP Held Share
1 Ripple 31 39.95B* 39.95%
2 UPbit 13 6.41B 6.41%
3 Coinbase 355 5.82B 5.82%
4 Binance 149 2.74B 2.74%
5 Chris Larsen 7 2.53B 2.53%
6 Bithumb 3 1.84B 1.84%
7 Unidentified wallet 1 1.80B 1.80%
8 Uphold 5 1.62B 1.62%
9 Arthur Britto 7 1.30B 1.30%
10 bitbank 2 574.5M 0.57%

*Ripple’s total includes 35.7 billion XRP in escrow plus approximately 4.25 billion XRP in account balances.

Exchanges Hold a Huge Share of XRP

The next major concentration sits with centralized exchanges.

UPbit ranks second with approximately 6.41 billion XRP across 13 accounts, equivalent to 6.41% of the supply. Coinbase follows with 5.82 billion XRP across 355 accounts, while Binance controls addresses containing roughly 2.74 billion XRP. Bithumb, Uphold, and Bitbank also appear in the top 10.

However, these numbers should not be interpreted as indicating that the exchanges own all those tokens. Exchange wallets typically custody XRP on behalf of customers, meaning one blockchain entity can represent potentially millions of beneficial owners.

Two XRP insiders also remain prominent. Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen is linked by XRPSCAN to seven accounts containing approximately 2.53 billion XRP, or 2.53% of the supply.

Arthur Britto, another XRP Ledger co-founder, is associated with seven accounts containing roughly 1.3 billion XRP.

There is also a notable unknown. The seventh-largest entry is an unidentified address holding approximately 1.8 billion XRP, worth 1.8% of the entire supply.

The concentration, therefore, requires context. Ripple’s escrow dominates the headline number, while exchange balances largely represent customer assets.

Still, the data show that a relatively small group of identifiable entities remains responsible for custodying a substantial portion of XRP in 2026.
