BlackRock’s Secret Weapon Against Bitcoin Crashes Just Hit the SEC’s Desk

Key Takeaways
  • BlackRock filed with the SEC 19 to launch the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT).
  • The fund is designed to cushion investors against Bitcoin price declines.
  • The protection comes at the cost of capped upside, meaning investors could miss substantial gains during major Bitcoin rallies.

BlackRock is preparing to introduce a new Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to cushion investors against sharp price declines, potentially opening the cryptocurrency market to investors reluctant to tolerate Bitcoin’s notorious volatility.

The world’s largest asset manager filed a registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, which would trade under the proposed ticker PBIT.

Unlike BlackRock’s $65 billion iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), the new product would use options contracts and fixed-income securities to provide Bitcoin-linked returns while seeking to limit downside exposure.

However, the protection comes with a significant trade-off: investors would sacrifice some potential gains during Bitcoin rallies.

The filing arrives as Bitcoin trades around $81,500, approximately 26% below its level a year earlier, highlighting growing demand for investment products designed to manage cryptocurrency volatility.

How BlackRock Plans to Protect Investors From Bitcoin Crashes

PBIT would take a different approach from conventional spot Bitcoin ETFs, which generally track the cryptocurrency’s price movements.

Rather than holding Bitcoin directly, the proposed fund would primarily use options on IBIT or similar Bitcoin-related investments.

According to the SEC filing, the strategy would involve three overlapping tranches of options contracts, established in different months.

Each tranche would combine purchased and sold call options, allowing the fund to participate in Bitcoin’s price appreciation up to a predetermined ceiling.

The purchased calls would generally have strike prices approximately 10% below the reference asset’s initial value.

This structure is intended to limit losses relative to that starting value, although the protection is not guaranteed and does not eliminate the possibility of substantial losses.

PBIT would also hold cash, money market instruments, short-term government securities, and investment-grade fixed-income assets.

Interest generated from those holdings could help finance the options strategy and cushion potential losses.

However, the fund’s actual performance would depend on market conditions, options pricing, trading expenses, and the timing of investors’ purchases.

But Investors Must Give Up Some Bitcoin Gains

The biggest drawback is that PBIT would not fully participate in Bitcoin’s strongest rallies.

By selling call options at higher strike prices, BlackRock would establish an approximate ceiling on potential returns.

If Bitcoin surged significantly beyond that threshold, PBIT investors could miss substantial gains compared with those holding IBIT directly.

The protection also differs from a traditional insurance policy.

BlackRock’s filing explicitly warns that the fund will not offer a fixed protection floor or return cap because its three option tranches overlap and have different starting dates.

Investors who purchase shares after Bitcoin has already rallied could experience losses that exceed the initially targeted protection level.

Extreme volatility could further weaken the strategy, while management fees and trading expenses would reduce returns.

BlackRock has not yet disclosed PBIT’s management fee or finalized its launch date.

Why BlackRock Is Expanding Beyond Traditional Bitcoin ETFs

The proposed fund represents another step in BlackRock’s effort to develop investment products around Bitcoin.

Its flagship IBIT held approximately $65.34 billion in net assets as of Oct. 16, making it the largest US spot Bitcoin ETF.

BlackRock has also introduced the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA), which uses covered-call strategies to generate income from Bitcoin-related holdings.

While IBIT provides direct price exposure and BITA prioritizes income, PBIT would target investors seeking some downside protection.

The distinction could appeal to financial advisors, retirement-focused investors, and institutions interested in cryptocurrency exposure but concerned about significant drawdowns.

Demand for Bitcoin investment products remains substantial. IBIT attracted approximately $665 million in inflows on October 19, the same day BlackRock submitted its latest filing.

Nevertheless, PBIT remains a proposal rather than an available investment product.

BlackRock’s SEC registration statement specifies a 75-day effective period, while the preliminary prospectus makes clear that shares cannot be sold before the registration becomes effective.

The filing also warns that investors could lose some or all of their investment despite the proposed protective strategy.

If launched, PBIT could offer a new way to access Bitcoin’s upside potential without accepting its full downside risk.
