Days after Nouriel “Dr. Doom” Roubini debated BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes in Taipei, Taiwan, the foul-mouthed Bitcoin critic is still not letting go over how everything panned out.
The New York University economics professor is now threatening to sue Hayes for releasing a “doctored edited highlights video of the debate” to select media organizations. According to Roubini, the video makes him “look bad” as his talking points have allegedly been edited out.
On top of the lawsuit threat, the Bitcoin basher had a few choice insults for Hayes calling him the “biggest a**hole, jerk, manipulator and criminal in the world.”
Since the debate took place on July 2, Roubini has been demanding that the BitMEX CEO release the entire footage of the proceedings. That has yet to materialize, leaving Roubini to pour out his frustrations on social media.
According to Roubini, the reason Hayes will not release the full video is that the economist made him look like a “total idiot in our debate” and consequently had to “censor” the footage.
On Crypto Twitter, though, there has been little sympathy for Dr. Doom. Some social media users questioned why Roubini agreed to debate Hayes without ensuring that he would get access to full unedited footage of the event.
According to Bloomberg, Hayes had the rights to the video recording of the Bitcoin debate which was moderated by BBC’s Andrew Neil. Additionally, the audience at the debate was prevented from recording video. Some audio recordings have, however, been leaked online.
This weekend Roubini took his attacks on Hayes to Europe. In an event held in the French city of Aix-en-Provence, Dr. Doom renewed his evisceration of the Bitcoin space while citing Hayes as an example of all that is wrong with the sector:
“This is a space that is full of scammers, conmen, carnival barkers, little criminals, insiders, snake oil peddlers, people who are talking their book 24/7 and manipulators… I will give you just one example – I debated unfortunately just a few days ago in Taipei, Arthur Hayes who is the head of the biggest crypto derivatives exchange in the world.”
Roubini then railed against the leveraged trading that BitMEX offers while sympathizing with the people who had been “REKT.” Addressing his audience, Dr. Doom explained that REKT meant “sodomized:”
“REKT is the English term for literally ‘sodomized’, it means sodomized”
During the same event, Roubini further argued that BitMEX was registered in Seychelles to avoid regulatory scrutiny. This way, they would not have to observe strict anti-money laundering requirements and know your client processes, according to Roubini.
To be fair, Roubini also turned his fire on other Bitcoin businesses. While noting that BitMEX was allegedly just one of many bad actors, he said operators of crypto businesses were “criminals” who are worse than “drug pushers” and “crack cocaine pushers.”
“They are a d*ck to you and then they destroy you and then they liquidate you and they make profit out of it.”
