Key Takeaways
For years, blockchain-based soccer games have attempted to replicate the immersion of mainstream sports titles — and have largely fallen short.
That may be about to change.
Soccerverse, a Polygon-based soccer management and trading game, has secured a worldwide licensing agreement with FIFPRO, the global players’ union representing nearly every active professional soccer player across 70+ national associations.
The deal grants Soccerverse the right to utilize real names, likenesses, and player data within its game — a first-of-its-kind arrangement for a Web3 soccer title.

The license immediately distinguishes Soccerverse from earlier Web3 soccer projects that relied on generic or procedurally generated athletes to avoid licensing costs.
With FIFPRO’s approval, real soccer players, from global stars to players in underrepresented leagues, can now exist inside Soccerverse’s on-chain ecosystem.
Andrew Gore, CEO of Soccerverse, framed the agreement as a step toward legitimacy for the project’s approach to fan-driven governance.
“Trust and authenticity are critical to our vision, and this license is our commitment to building a legitimate football universe,” he said. The partnership, he added, also offers a platform for players from smaller footballing nations to gain visibility.
With licensed data now available, in-game decisions, transfers, squad building, talent scouting, can more closely reflect real-world dynamics.
It also opens the door for deeper community-driven gameplay, since the game’s economy and many of its rules are shaped by players rather than a central studio.
Web3 gaming is still fighting for its identity.
After the speculative boom of 2021-22, players have become more selective, pushing developers to offer experiences that are less extractive and more robust.
Since its launch in January 2025, Soccerverse has drawn a modest but active player base of roughly 2,000 club managers.
The project blends on-chain transparency with elements familiar to fans of traditional sports simulators.
It has long-term roster building, economic strategy, and competition between user-owned clubs.
The FIFPRO license gives it something the broader Web3 sector has struggled to secure: a foothold in established sports IP.
FIFPRO highlighted Soccerverse’s community-owned, decentralized structure as a motivating factor for the partnership, saying it aligned with the union’s interest in platforms where fans “shape the game and share ownership.”
Whether the partnership is enough to elevate Soccerverse among soccer fans remains to be seen.
Its ambition, to become Web3’s closest answer to Soccer Manager, faces challenges both technical and cultural.
Mature gameplay, sustainable economies, and transparent governance are notoriously difficult areas for blockchain games.
Still, by securing rights to real players, Soccerverse has crossed a threshold few Web3 titles have ever reached.
The question now is whether authenticity will translate into growth — or if the project will need far more than real-world names to win over soccer audiences.
