Key Takeaways

  • Kenya moved 15 million academic records onto Avalanche.
  • Certificate verification drops from months to seconds.
  • Blockchain rollout aims to curb academic fraud.

Kenya has launched one of the largest government-backed blockchain credential initiatives to date, moving more than 15 million historical academic records onto Avalanche‘s C-Chain to modernize certificate verification and combat academic fraud.

The rollout, led by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), also includes nearly one million Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates issued in 2025 through a new electronic certificate platform.

The new system replaces a largely paper-based verification process that often took weeks and, for large institutional requests, as long as six months. Universities, employers, and other authorized organizations can now verify certificates online in seconds, while graduates can securely access and download their credentials without relying solely on physical documents.

Avalanche Powers Kenya’s National Academic Verification System

The initial deployment covers examination records dating back to 1989, marking the first phase of a broader plan to digitize approximately 35 million academic credentials across Kenya. Future expansion will include primary school qualifications, advanced diplomas, and government teacher-training certifications.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere said the platform provides candidates with a more secure and convenient way to manage their academic credentials online while reducing reliance on paper certificates. Avalanche founder Emin Gün Sirer described the rollout as an important step toward addressing widespread certificate fraud through tamper-resistant digital records.

Rather than relying on centralized databases and manual document checks, the blockchain-backed system creates an immutable reference that authorized users can compare against certificates presented by applicants. This makes forged credentials and fake verification websites significantly more difficult to use successfully.

Government Blockchain Adoption Continues to Expand

The Kenya deployment adds another high-profile public-sector use case for Avalanche beyond decentralized finance. Ava Labs has previously supported government record modernization projects, including California’s digitization of 42 million vehicle titles and Bergen County, New Jersey’s blockchain-based property deed initiative, which covers roughly 370,000 records.

While the announcement represents one of Avalanche’s largest real-world government implementations, it did not immediately translate into a major market reaction for AVAX.

The token showed no sustained breakout following the news, suggesting investors remain focused on whether the rollout ultimately expands to the targeted 35 million records and drives meaningful long-term blockchain activity.
