Update: Bitfinex is operational again and trading hit a new all-time high of $6,450 on the exchange.

Major bitcoin exchange and trading platform Bitfinex is currently offline due to maintenance as bitcoin price tears near a new all-time high.

Bitfinex, the world’s largest bitcoin exchange by trading volume, is currently experiencing an outage with the exchange citing an unscheduled ‘infrastructure maintenance’ as the reason for the downtime.

Per its status page, Bitfinex explained:

These updates are critical for the platform and must be performed in order to be able to guarantee long-term platform stability and scalability.

The trading platform insists that the interruption is short-term with traders expected to experience an outage for 20 minutes. “During that period, the trading and financing platforms might be unavailable and no deposits or withdrawals will be processed,” a statement added.

At press time, it is now longer than the aforementioned 20 minutes as users continue to see the following banner when reaching the website’s portal.

The last-recorded trade on Bitfinex shows bitcoin’s traded value at $6,319.8 at a time when the cryptocurrency is surging to a new all-time high in other trading markets. On Bitstamp, bitcoin hit a new all-time high of $6,363.
