OpenAI has announced a new search engine called SearchGPT, powered by its advanced GPT-4 AI models. Unlike traditional AI tools, SearchGPT offers real-time access to internet-based information, and claims to provide a more dynamic search experience.
SearchGPT is a prototype technology built by OpenAI that combines its GPT language models with real-time web information.
While ChatGPT already provides links if requested, the new platform is designed to more closely approximate traditional search engines, organizing information into a browsable format with information extracted from websites summarized by AI.
Currently in its prototype stage, OpenAI is testing SearchGPT and has set up a waitlist for those eager to try it.
The interface features a large search box prompting users with “What are you looking for?” and aims to summarize and organize search results more effectively than Google. Relevant links are accessible via a sidebar, and users can refine their queries through a chatbox at the bottom of the page.
The results from SearchGPT will include in-line attributions and links, ensuring users can trace back the sources of information. OpenAI intends to integrate the best features of SearchGPT into ChatGPT eventually, but the timeline for this transition is not yet clear.
OpenAI said in their blog post that they are looking to get feedback on the prototype from users and publishers to “bring the best of the experience into ChatGPT.”
To sign up for the SearchGPT waitlist , you need a ChatGPT account. Once logged in, simply click the “Join waitlist” button.
Initial testing is reported to involve up to 10,000 participants, although the duration and expansion plans for the testing phase remain undisclosed.
