Key Takeaways
As anticipation builds for Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI, slated to be one of the biggest games ever made, the question of whether it will feature crypto continues to be debated.
Years of leaks, influencer speculation, and industry trends have fueled the idea that crypto could play a major role in the next installment.
But taken together, the evidence suggests a more nuanced reality—and it might not be the best news for crypto fans.

Speculation about crypto in GTA 6 dates back to June 2021, when respected industry insider Tom Henderson reported that some in-game missions would reward players in Bitcoin rather than cash.
“I heard recently that in GTA 6, some missions will reward you in Bitcoin instead of cash for completing some missions,” Henderson wrote on X at the time, adding that a stock market system could return with a crypto brokerage element.
I heard recently that in GTA 6, some missions will reward you in bitcoin instead of cash for completing some missions.
The stock market feature will return, with the addition of a broker for different cryptocurrencies. If GTA 6 incorporates this right, it's huge for crypto.
— Tom Henderson (@_Tom_Henderson_) June 3, 2021
He later clarified the payments would be strictly in-game and tied to high-level criminal characters seeking fast, “untraceable” transactions.
Henderson also cautioned that the information should be taken “with a bit of salt” ahead of any official confirmation.
Subsequent chatter echoed similar ideas.
In 2023, social media posts highlighted alleged leaks suggesting GTA 6 could include in-game crypto rewards that players could earn and trade, aligning with broader “play-to-earn” trends in gaming.
Still, Rockstar Games never confirmed such features.
Despite persistent rumors, there have been very clear signs Rockstar may be wary of integrating crypto systems directly.
Although Henderson himself stressed that any such features might not resemble tangible Bitcoin, Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive ended up taking a firm stance against real-world crypto.
In 2022, Rockstar updated its policies to ban the use of crypto and NFTs on fan-operated GTA V servers.
The move forced several projects — including servers offering NFT-based in-game assets — to shut down or pivot.
The crackdown suggested the company was cautious about blockchain-based economies, particularly those involving real-money trading.
Even so, the popularity of Grand Theft Auto roleplay (RP) servers highlights why crypto-related speculation persists.
These fan-made multiplayer worlds, often run via modifications like FiveM, allow players to take on roles ranging from police officers to business owners in community-driven environments.
Gina Lees, a writer on PC Games, wrote that the GTA RP mod “allows you to live your stories in the game, choosing one of many servers,” where players take on roles of typically non-playable characters and interact in a shared world.
Many servers have developed complex economies, complete with jobs, trade systems and virtual businesses.
Lees noted that communities within these servers have “formed businesses, gangs, and coalitions, and social structures in a pseudo-fantasy roleplay imitating the extremes of real life.”
At their peak, some RP servers have attracted large audiences on streaming platforms such as Twitch, turning them into a major cultural force within gaming.
Before Rockstar’s ban, some of these ecosystems experimented with crypto tokens and NFTs to represent ownership of rare items or to provide exclusive perks.
High-profile streamers and influencers have further fueled the narrative that GTA 6 could support lucrative digital economies.
Streamer Adin Ross along with FaZe Clan co-founder Faze Banks recently revealed they plan to release a “pro crypto” large-scale GTA 6 server.
“I’m going to make the server to where, if you make money in-game, you can cash out. I want people to be working and having an actual life in my server,” Ross said.
Banks explains how GTA 6 will create millionaires
“Would it surprise you if GTA launches its own marketplace where you can buy, sell and trade items? That’s probably how its gonna work”

Banks has suggested GTA 6 could introduce its own marketplace for trading items, drawing comparisons to Counter-Strike, where rare cosmetic skins have sold for hundreds of thousands — and in some cases, over $1 million.
“Why there are skins worth millions of dollars in CSGO is because you can own and trade them freely,” he said.
“You have a really rich guy who plays CSGO everyday, money’s nothing to him. He’ll go buy the rarest skin in the game for $1,000,000 like its nothing,” he added.
Adin Ross is planning to create a GTA 6 server where you can work and cash out in-game currency for ‘real-life’ cash

HipHopGamer, a Hot97 media personality, recently also said that GTA 6 “will produce millionaires.”
“We’re living in a time where UGC is a major thing. It’s wise and it’s worth the wait,” he added.
Even if GTA 6 does not directly incorporate real crypto systems, it is highly likely the game will reference or parody them.
The Grand Theft Auto series has long built its identity on satirising contemporary culture, from influencer culture to financial markets and political trends.
Previous titles also featured fictional stock exchanges and exaggerated corporate scandals.
Given the prominence of crypto in global discourse over the past decade its inclusion as a narrative or comedic element is almost certain given Rockstar’s ethos.
GTA 6 is scheduled for release on Nov. 19, 2026, after Rockstar Games delayed the title from its original 2025 window.
The game will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no confirmed PC release date yet — a strategy Rockstar has followed with previous titles.
While Rockstar has revealed limited official details, trailers and reports suggest the game will return to a Vice City-inspired setting, with a modern-day narrative and a dual-protagonist structure.
Gamers are expecting a significantly expanded open world, more dynamic non-playable characters, and deeper simulation systems.

Industry analysts expect GTA 6 to push technical boundaries, particularly in AI, world-building and player freedom.
Many expect the title to reshape the gaming industry’s economic model.
With Grand Theft Auto V generating more than $1 billion within three days of release and continuing to earn billions through its online mode, GTA 6 could become one of the most commercially successful entertainment products ever.
Analysts estimate development costs to be among the highest in gaming history, with some projections placing the budget in the range of $1–2 billion.
