Key Takeaways
  • Novig reportedly raised funding at a $2 billion valuation, four times its earlier $500 million valuation.
  • Sydney Sweeney is an equity partner, while crypto investors Pantera Capital and Multicoin Capital backed its February funding round.
  • The reported valuation follows its controversial advertising campaign.

Sydney Sweeney’s nude advertising campaign put Novig at the center of a debate over celebrity marketing and sports betting.

Three weeks later, the prediction-market operator reportedly has a $2 billion valuation.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Sept. 30, citing people familiar with the matter, that Novig had raised fresh funding at four times its earlier $500 million valuation.

The development adds a financial dimension to the campaign backlash previously covered by CCN, which examined criticism of Sweeney’s ads and the growing celebrity push into prediction markets.

A $2 Billion Valuation

Front Office Sports’ Sept. 30 report described Novig as negotiating a round expected to value the business at up to $2 billion.

Two sources told the publication that the financing could close this winter, potentially before year-end.

Novig confirmed to FOS that it was fundraising, but the amount sought and participating investors were unclear.

That account differs from the Journal’s report of funding already raised.

However, both point toward the same valuation but provide different descriptions of the financing’s status.

Moving from $500 million to $2 billion represents a 300% increase.

Novig’s $2 Billion Report Follows Olympic Backlash

The reported valuation jump comes weeks after Sweeney’s campaign drew criticism from athletes who accused it of sexualizing women’s sport.

As CCN previously reported, four-time Olympic swimming champion Ariarne Titmus called the campaign “an absolute joke.”

Meanwhile, gymnast Gracie Kramer responded with a video showcasing her athletic ability, declaring:

“This is what a woman in sport looks like.”

Novig reportedly quadrupled to a $2 billion valuation weeks after Sydney Sweeney’s nude ad sparked fury among Olympic athletes.

Australian water polo silver medallist Tilly Kearns and boxer Skye Nicolson also criticized the campaign. Nicolson nevertheless acknowledged that the outrage was giving Novig “exactly what they wanted.”

The original advertisement had attracted more than 33 million Instagram views by mid-September, according to ABC News.

Sydney Sweeney Has Equity Behind the Campaign

Novig unveiled its “Just Sports” campaign on Sept. 9, naming Sydney Sweeney as both a strategic partner and equity holder.

“The campaign was about embracing a fun idea,” Sweeney said in the announcement.

The campaign promoted Novig’s exclusive focus on sports, using provocative imagery to distinguish the platform in an increasingly crowded market.

Co-founder and CEO Jacob Fortinsky said Sweeney helped communicate that positioning “in a way that’s impossible to ignore.”

Crypto Investors’ Bet Predates the Ad Blitz

Novig’s connection to crypto venture capital was established months before Sweeney’s campaign.

In February, the company announced a $75 million Series B led by Pantera Capital, with participation from Multicoin Capital and other investors.

Another milestone followed in June, when Novig was designated a contract market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Its exchange model allows customers to trade sports outcomes against one another, with prices determined by market activity.

The reported $2 billion valuation suggests investors are willing to pay substantially more for Novig’s growth prospects.
