What Does Revolut’s Gibraltar Crypto License Allow?

The approval gives Revolut regulatory permission to provide three core digital asset services under Gibraltar’s Financial Services Act.

These include transmitting and executing cryptocurrency orders, safeguarding customer assets, and offering staking services.

Unlike a licence covering only cryptocurrency trading, the broader authorization allows Revolut to develop multiple digital asset products through a regulated entity.

Emil Urmashin, Revolut’s general manager of crypto and new bets, said the approval reflects the company’s commitment to regulatory compliance. He described Gibraltar’s established DLT framework as a foundation for expanding trusted cryptocurrency services internationally.

However, Revolut has not disclosed which additional countries will receive services through the new entity or when those offerings will launch.

Revolut’s 16M Crypto Users Highlight Expansion Potential

Revolut’s existing customer base provides significant distribution potential for its cryptocurrency business.

Approximately one in five of its retail customers already use crypto services, according to the company’s reported figures.

The Gibraltar license adds another regulated operating entity alongside Revolut Ltd in the UK and Revolut Digital Assets Europe Ltd, which operates under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).

The company has also pursued additional financial services approvals internationally, including conditional US banking authorization.

These developments suggest Revolut is building separate regulatory structures rather than relying on a single license for its global operations.

Still, the Gibraltar approval does not automatically make cryptocurrency services available to all 80 million customers.

Gibraltar Reopens Revolut Onboarding After Earlier Restrictions

Alongside the license announcement, Gibraltar’s government confirmed that Revolut had fully resumed onboarding local residents.

New customers can once again register for Revolut’s electronic money and payments services following cooperation between the company, government officials, and the GFSC.

Trade and Industry Minister Nigel Feetham welcomed the development, emphasizing access to international fintech services alongside regulatory safeguards. The government also expects three DLT permissions to be issued during the same week, reflecting continued interest in Gibraltar’s digital asset framework.

For Revolut, the next milestone will be identifying the international markets supported by its new subsidiary.

Until then, the licence represents an expansion of regulatory capacity rather than a confirmed worldwide launch of new cryptocurrency products.
