Tron founder Justin Sun has been elected as Prime Minister of Liberland, a micronation situated between the borders of Serbia and Croatia.
In a recent election entirely powered by blockchain technology, the micronation elected Sun as both Prime Minister and the Speaker of its Congress.
Liberland is a self-proclaimed micronation located on a small strip of land along the Danube River between Serbia and Croatia.
The micronation was in 2015, by Czech libertarian activist and politician Vít Jedlička. The area is incredibly small measuring just 2.7 square miles.
Crypto plays a driving role in Liberland’s vision of a decentralized and free market economy. Upon its creation, the micronation quickly embraced digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum for financial transactions.
Liberland sees blockchain technology as a tool for transparent governance, which it uses for citizenship management, voting and more.
Crypto’s emphasis on decentralization, innovation and low government oversight makes micronations like Liberland an important part of the industry’s future vision.
The Tron founder has already began to take his newly elected role as Prime Minister seriously and has set out his plans for Liberland.
Sun, a highly influential figure in the crypto space, said he aims to position Liberland as a global symbol of libertarian philosophy.
In a post on X , Sun said he sees Liberland as a beacon of individual freedom, comparable to how Vatican City serves as a spiritual home for Catholics.
“Just as Vatican City represents a central spiritual authority for Catholics, Liberland will be the heart of the libertarian movement,” Sun wrote.
“Libertarians everywhere may have their own countries and nationalities, but Liberland will serve as their ideological homeland—a place where their beliefs in freedom, autonomy, and voluntary governance are respected and embodied.”
Sun highlighted the shared beliefs of “global innovators” like Elon Musk, who advocate for less centralized control and greater individual freedom.
“[Musk’s] advocacy for less centralized control aligns with the values that Liberland stands for, further solidifying the global relevance of our movement,” he wrote.
It’s not everyday a crypto executive becomes a Prime Minister – and the community’s reaction has been unsurprisingly mixed.
While many have celebrated Sun’s vision, claiming the move will help bring more exposure to a decentralized future – some have been left unimpressed.
Charles Hoskinson, co-founder of Ethereum and Cardano, responded to the news by posting a 30 second video on X of him laughing hysterically into the camera.
“I’m either laughing or crying. This cycle is a new level of crazy,” the post read .
It is not currently clear what the future holds for Liberland with Sun at its helm, but it is evident that crypto’s fascination with micronations is only just beginning.
