Key Takeaways

  • Aiden Pleterski will represent himself when his four-week fraud and money laundering jury trial begins in Toronto on Oct. 5.
  • Investors sought to recover roughly $40 million that was given to Pleterski for crypto and forex trading, while bankruptcy proceedings recovered about $3 million for roughly 160 investors.
  • A bankruptcy trustee previously alleged that Pleterski invested less than 2% of the money received and spent nearly $16 million personally. Pleterski disputes the findings, and the criminal allegations have not been proven in court.

Aiden Pleterski, the self-described Canadian “Crypto King,” is heading into a multimillion-dollar fraud trial without a defense lawyer, adding an unusual twist to a case where investors have recovered only a fraction of the money they handed over.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru denied Pleterski’s request to postpone the proceedings so he could secure counsel. The four-week jury trial is scheduled to begin in Toronto on Oct. 5.

Pleterski faces charges of fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime. He denies wrongdoing, and the allegations remain unproven.

$40M Went In, About $3M Came Back

The criminal trial follows years of attempts to determine what happened to investor funds.

Investors forced Pleterski into bankruptcy in 2022 while trying to recover roughly $40 million they had provided for cryptocurrency and foreign-exchange trading. Bankruptcy proceedings ultimately recovered about $3 million for roughly 160 investors, according to court reporting.

That means the recovery process has so far returned only a small fraction of the amount investors were seeking.

The bankruptcy trustee, Grant Thornton, previously alleged that Pleterski invested less than 2% of the money received while spending nearly $16 million on himself. Pleterski disputes the trustee’s findings.

Pleterski Wanted More Time to Hire a Lawyer

Pleterski had retained lawyer Marco Sciarra specifically to request a postponement of the trial.

Sciarra told the court that Pleterski had been trying to raise money for legal representation and that extended family members were prepared to liquidate assets if more time were granted.

However, the relatives and assets were not identified to the court. Crown attorney Scott Patterson challenged Pleterski’s efforts to secure counsel, while Nakatsuru ultimately rejected the adjournment request without giving reasons.

The trial dates had already been fixed in June 2025.

Judge Will Take an ‘Enhanced Role’

Self-representation makes an already complex financial case more unusual.

The Ontario Superior Court notes that defendants have the right to represent themselves, although they remain responsible for complying with criminal procedure and managing their own defense.

Nakatsuru told Pleterski he would take an “enhanced role”, including raising objections on his behalf where necessary to prevent inadmissible evidence from reaching the jury.

The result is a striking contrast heading into Oct. 5: Prosecutors will present a case involving tens of millions of dollars in alleged investor losses, while the man at its center will personally challenge that evidence before the jury.
