Key Takeaways

  • Mexican prosecutors say a deadly home invasion may have been motivated by an attempt to steal Bitcoin held through a cold-storage device.
  • Four people, including musician Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife and three-year-old daughter, were killed, while the couple’s six-year-old son survived.
  • Reports of a $1.5 million Bitcoin stash remain unconfirmed, with testimony cited in court putting the victim’s known crypto investment closer to 3 million Mexican pesos.
  • The case follows a surge in physical attacks on crypto holders, particularly in France.

A brutal killing near Mexico City is being investigated as a possible cryptocurrency robbery after prosecutors alleged the attackers were searching for access to Bitcoin belonging to one of the victims.

Jonathan Meléndez, a 38-year-old keyboardist with Mexican indie band Camilo Séptimo, was killed at his home in Atizapán de Zaragoza on Sept. 1 alongside his pregnant wife, Ana Paola, their three-year-old daughter and a 21-year-old household employee.

The family’s dog was also killed, while their six-year-old son was found unharmed.

Two suspects, Diego Sebastián “N” and Gerardo “N,” were arrested the following day. Authorities say Diego had a business relationship with Meléndez, which may have allowed him to enter the property without arousing suspicion.

Mexico’s security secretary said there had previously been demands for money and threats connected to the relationship.

Prosecutors Investigate Missing Crypto

The cryptocurrency angle has become a central part of the investigation.

During an initial court hearing, prosecutors alleged that the suspects went to the property seeking a cold-storage device believed to provide access to a substantial amount of Bitcoin.

However, the exact value remains unclear.

Some reports have put the alleged stash at roughly 30 million Mexican pesos, or around $1.5 million. But detailed Mexican court reporting said a relative told investigators that Meléndez had approximately 3 million pesos invested in cryptocurrency.

Investigators also said a USB device believed to contain access information could not be found following the killings.

Authorities recovered a safe from the suspects’ getaway vehicle and are investigating whether crypto was transferred on Sept. 1. Prosecutors presented around 70 pieces of evidence at the initial hearing and alleged that the killings were premeditated.

Reports have also claimed Bitcoin may have subsequently been transferred to the wife of one suspect in Spain. However, that claim has not been publicly confirmed by prosecutors, and authorities have not established whether the suspects successfully obtained any crypto.

Mexico Case Echoes France’s Crypto Crime Wave

The killings add Mexico to a growing list of countries dealing with violent attacks targeting crypto wealth.

France has become the most prominent hotspot.

Chainalysis recorded 19 publicly known violent crypto incidents in France in 2025 and another 30 through mid-2026. French authorities have documented more than 70 incidents, suggesting the publicly visible figures significantly understate the scale of the problem.

The country’s cases have included home invasions and kidnappings, with attackers increasingly targeting relatives to pressure crypto owners.

More than 40% of documented French incidents involved a family member or associate rather than the holder directly.

Physical Crypto Attacks Are Rising

The trend extends well beyond France.

Chainalysis documented 46 violent crypto incidents globally through late June 2026, compared with 40 over the same period last year.

Criminals successfully extracted more than $30 million during those attacks. Home invasions now represent 37% of incidents.

The Mexico case also highlights a key difference between crypto theft and conventional financial crime.

Criminals do not necessarily need to hack a blockchain or crack a hardware wallet. If they can identify the person controlling the private keys, physical coercion can become the attack vector.

For crypto holders, that increasingly makes protecting the link between their real-world identity and digital wealth as important as protecting the wallet itself.
