Key Takeaways

  • Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to allow retirement funds to invest in cryptocurrency.
  • The FT report indicates that the president might sign an executive order for the same within a week.
  • At present, retirement funds only invest in public stocks and mutual funds.

The United States President is reportedly set to sign a new executive order to open the $9 trillion U.S. retirement market to cryptocurrency investments.

The report comes just hours after U.S. lawmakers passed three historic crypto bills with bipartisan support, marking the start of a new era for crypto.

Trump to Open 401K Retirement Plans to Crypto Investment

According to a report published in the Financial Times, the Trump executive order would allow 401 (k) retirement funds to make crypto and alternative investments.

These investments include various asset classes, including digital assets, funds specializing in infrastructure agreements, metals, private loans, and corporate takeovers.

According to the sources, the executive order would direct Washington regulatory bodies to look into the last obstacles that must be removed before such alternative investments may be added to professionally managed funds that 401(k) investors use.

“President Trump is committed to restoring prosperity for everyday Americans and safeguarding their economic future. However, no decisions should be deemed official unless they come from President Trump himself,” the White House said in a statement.

The potential use of cryptocurrency as an investment in a retirement fund could encourage greater crypto adoption and offer better accessibility and investment opportunities.

This move could unlock a flood of retirement capital into BTC, leading to bullish sentiments, as institutions chase compliance clarity and retail gets newfound access.

Trump’s Push to Bring Crypto Mainstream

The latest report that the Trump administration is considering allowing retirement funds to invest in crypto could prove pivotal in mainstreaming crypto.

One of the most common ways for working Americans to save for retirement is through 401(k) plans. These plans permit workers to make tax-free investments in publicly traded stocks with a portion of their pay. However, only public stock and bond mutual funds hold most retirement fund investments.

Trump rose to power after a crypto-fueled campaign, promising to reverse years of regulatory clampdowns and enforcement actions by the previous government.

Within the first six months of his second presidential term, Trump has fulfilled most of his crypto promises during his election campaign, whether by taking back conservative regulations under the Biden administration or passing comprehensive crypto regulations.

Despite the criticism and his work style, Trump will go down in history as the president who gave crypto a new lease of life and made it mainstream.
