Key Takeaways
  • Off The Grid is likely to see a full launch at some point in 2025.
  • Moonray and Paradise Tycoon will have no Web3 features when they launch on PS5, but may reinstate them over time.
  • PlayStation 5 Web3 titles may struggle to implement all their blockchain and crypto features under Sony’s strict policies.

Web3 games are going mainstream in 2025, and some are coming to Sony’s wildly successful and powerful gaming console, the PlayStation 5.

Here’s a look at some of this year’s upcoming Web3 titles.

Web3 PS5 Games

Off the Grid

Launched in October 2024, Gunzilla’s dystopian cybernetic battle-royale shooter “Off The Grid” is the first and only Web3 title playable on the PlayStation 5 right now in early access.

It’s built on a custom L1 network called the GUNZ Network, which is based on the Avalanche (AVAX) blockchain. Notably, the GUNZ mainnet is set to launch nodes on April 17, 2025, sparking hope that the game’s full launch is happening this year.

Following in the footsteps of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Fortnite, Apex, and Escape from Tarkov, Off The Grid drops you into intense player-vs-player and player-vs-environment game modes where players duke it out to be the last one standing.

The blockchain side of the game comes as an optional extra. You can play the game and its story in its entirety without ever engaging with the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) or the marketplace available.

If players decide they wish to engage with the Web3 elements, they can convert specific items collected in-game and then mint weapons, armor, and upgrades as NFTs, which will be unique to their character and tied to their account.

These can then be sold on the platform’s marketplace.

2025 Launches

Moonray

Developed by Moonray Studios and launched in 2024, Moonray is a battle arena featuring some pretty awesome-looking ranged and melee combat with a number of game modes to play.

It’s built on the Ethereum blockchain and is integrated with Coinbase’s Base network, offering optional Web3 features such as NFTs, which represent in-game assets like character skins, as well as the MNRY token, which can be used for in-game purchases, rewards, and other interactions.

It’s currently in ‘alpha’ mode as a free-to-play title on the Epic Game Store, and has plans to launch on the PS5 this year. At present, the porting process is underway, and playtests have been scheduled for H2 2025.

Interestingly, the game’s PS5 version will reportedly be stripped of its Web3 features at launch due to Sony’s strict policies. It’s unknown if this is a permanent decision, as Off The Grid is seemingly able to offer optional Web3 features and operate in a gray area with its custom blockchain and ‘early access’ status.

This could change depending on market trends, regulatory concerns, and overall development in the Web3 gaming space. If Off the Grid can succeed and launch fully on PlayStation 5 with optional Web3 features, Moonray could do the same.

Paradise Tycoon

Paradise Tycoon is a multiplayer simulation and tycoon game akin to the wildly popular Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley titles. Set in a beautiful tropical metaverse, players are invited to manage and build up an uninhabited island and turn it into their own personalized paradise.

It’s currently available in Beta form on Windows, iOS, and Android, and it features Web3 features, such as NFT requirements have not yet been implemented.

It’s built on the Avalanche blockchain, and when fully launched, invites players to hire NFT-based crew members to increase their output through automated tasks, collaborate and trade with other players, as well as participate in regular events and quests.

Through such activities, players can earn the game’s native MOANI tokens and use them for various in-game interactions.

Similar to Moonray, this game may also drop its Web3 features for its PS5 launch. However, also similarly to Moonray, its blockchain and crypto features have always been optional, suggesting that over time, it could reintroduce Web3 mechanics.

KOMPETE (Unconfirmed)

KOMPETE is a free-to-play multiplayer game and currently has two game modes, a fast-paced battle-royale shooter, and a Mario Kart-style racing mode featuring bazookas. At present, it’s developing a basketball game with plans to add many more games.

It’s built on the Ethereum blockchain and is integrated with Coinbase’s Base network.

This cross-platform title is currently in early access on Windows, Epic Game Store, iOS, and Android. According to its website, it’s coming to PlayStation, and that could be at some point this year.

Players can own and trade cosmetics in the form of NFTs, and the game features a native crypto token, $KOMPETE, which is used for in-game transactions, tournament participation, and ultimately distributed as a reward to players.

As it’s cross-platform and part of an ever-expanding ecosystem of games, KOMPETE may be one of the more important Web3 titles to launch on the PlayStation 5, when it does.
