Key Takeaways
  • SYMBIOGENESIS was originally slated to shut down in July 2025.
  • Sony aims to build an interconnected gaming and rewards ecosystem on Soneium.
  • SYMBIOGENESIS has 10,000 NFTs in its collection, but just 554 unique owners.

Video game publisher Square Enix, famed for smash hit franchises like Final Fantasy, is reviving its recently shuttered Web3 game, SYMBIOGENESIS, in partnership with Japan’s technology powerhouse, Sony.

Now, a “joint campaign” will see the game launched on the Soneium blockchain alongside two other Web3 titles, and form the foundations of a powerful new gaming ecosystem.

On Sony’s Chain

Square Enix’s NFT-based narrative game SYMBIOGENESIS was initially scheduled to shut down in July 2025, following the release of its final chapter.

But in a new twist, the title is now being folded into Sony’s Web3 gaming ecosystem through its blockchain platform Soneium.

According to a press release shared with CCN, SYMBIOGENESIS will be part of Sony’s push to develop immersive storytelling experiences with interoperable digital assets—rewards and items that can move across games such as Evermoon and Sleepagotchi.

“Square Enix is the example of top game publishers choosing Soneium to build a new kind of entertainment layer of the internet, where characters, rewards, and narratives travel across games, communities, and apps,” the release stated.

Evermoon is an on-chain 5v5 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title offering crypto rewards and NFT-based progression.

Sleepagotchi LITE, meanwhile, is a monster-collecting mini-app integrated into the LINE messaging platform and also available on Telegram.

Players who complete Chapters 1 through 4 of SYMBIOGENESIS by May 31 will gain access to exclusive digital collectibles, limited edition NFTs, and early entry to the Evermoon beta.

Additional rewards tied to upcoming Soneium launches are also on offer. A spokesperson from Soneium told CCN:

“While we can’t disclose the precise rationale, the partnership reflects Soneium’s extensive network within Japan’s entertainment industry, including close relationships with leading game studios”

Back in Action?

SYMBIOGENESIS is slated to conclude this summer, and whilst its integration into the Soneium ecosystem may suggest it will be evolving into a larger, cross-platform experience powered by Sony’s blockchain infrastructure, its future remains uncertain. Soneium’s spokesperson explained to CCN:

“At present, this marks their final season. We continue to engage in discussions with Square Enix about potential future collaboration, but as Soneium’s point of view, we’re unable to share further details.”

It’s unclear how many players SYMBIOGENESIS has attracted or how many still engage with it regularly. However, with only 554 unique holders in its 10,000-item NFT collection, active participation appears limited.

Trading activity has also been sparse. While NFT listings have spiked in the past 24 hours, just a dozen sales have taken place over the last two days.

Despite its new role in Sony’s Web3 gaming plans, whether SYMBIOGENESIS will enjoy a longer life on Soneium is still uncertain. The title enters its final season on May 14 and remains scheduled to shut down in July.
