Key Takeaways
  • GameFi and Web3 gaming are experiencing a big resurgence in 2025.
  • AAA gaming titles can take up to six years to develop. This game is expected to launch in 2026.
  • Anonymous Labs was behind the Simon’s Cat (CAT) memecoin launch.

GameFi is showing signs of life again in 2025, and now one of TV’s grittiest franchises is joining the action.

A Web3 game based on Peaky Blinders is officially in the works, but there are questions about how, or even if, it’ll all come together by the planned 2026 launch.

A Gritty Vision With a Long Road Ahead

French media giant Banijay has teamed up with blockchain outfit Anonymous Labs to create what’s being billed as an AAA Web3 title, set in the 1920s Birmingham underworld made famous by the show.

The game is expected to feature action sequences, digital collectibles, and a tokenized in-game economy.

Details are thin. Outside of vague promises of “high-fidelity gameplay” and “immersive storytelling,” there’s little to go on, and with AAA games typically taking upwards of six years to build, the 2026 target already feels ambitious.

Banijay’s David Christopher framed the game as a new way for fans to interact with the brand, saying it’s about “embracing the future of digital entertainment.”

However, whether it delivers anything playable, let alone groundbreaking, remains to be seen.

Who’s Actually Building It?

Banijay Rights is the global distribution arm of French multinational content producer and distributor Banijay.

It has sold the Peaky Blinders franchise to over 190 countries worldwide, and also works to license the show’s intellectual property across multiple platforms, including other games.

The development side, however, falls to Anonymous Labs,  a Web3 team whose biggest success so far is helping launch the Simon’s Cat meme token (CAT) last year with backing from the Floki community.

CAT reached a peak market cap of north of $425 million, but it wasn’t tied to a game.

With no major game development credits to its name, it’s unclear how Anonymous Labs plans to bring a full-scale AAA experience to life, especially one built on blockchain infrastructure.
