Changpeng Zhao, Binance founder
Changpeng “CZ” Zhao is the founder and former CEO of Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume. In 2025, he still mattered even after stepping down as Binance’s US case became a warning sign for the whole industry. It meant that crypto could not ignore anti-money-laundering (AML) rules anymore.
CZ was born in China and moved to Canada with his family in the 1980s. He studied computer science at McGill University and worked in trading technology, including an internship at the Tokyo Stock Exchange and roles at Bloomberg.
In July 2017, he launched Binance after raising money through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) for BNB. Binance grew fast and became the largest exchange by early 2018.
CZ’s case helped push the idea that “big exchanges must act like financial institutions,” with real compliance controls and monitoring. Otherwise, the former CEO spent 2025 shifting his investments into a “family office” tied to YZi Labs, formerly known as Binance Labs.
In 2026, CZ is trying build again. He is tied to investing through YZi Labs and keeps talking with governments about crypto rules while also pushing projects like Giggle Academy. But the biggest issue is still trust: after the US case, the pardon, and repeated token blowups, people will judge him by clean successes, likely holding the controversies against him for some time.
