The Sui (SUI) network suffered a significant outage that halted block production for over two hours. Although this has since resumed, validators are still down as the Sui team rolls out a fresh update.
According to Sui blockchain explorer SuiVision, block production stopped at around 9:15 am UTC for over two hours. The incident has been reported to be resolved.
An early investigation into the outage by Web3 security firm ExVul concluded that the bug caused a “DOS due to integer overflow.” The ExVul team kindly pointed to the supposed bug on Github and offered a patch code to remedy the matter.
Just over an hour ago, the Sui team publicly announced and rolled out a v1.37.4 patch. The Sui status website now reports the network as operational.
Over the past year, Sui’s uptime track record has been peppered with some unfortunate downtime and outages. Today’s outage would be the first time that mainnet validators have suffered issues since the mainnet launched in May 2023.
That said, in July 2024, the network experienced a major outage at the node level, which crashed when processing transactions. Most recently, just over a week ago, the Sui testnet validators also started failing and could not accept new user transactions.
It’s an unfortunate series of events for the budding Layer-1 network, which hopes to compete directly with Solana. But it’s not like Solana hasn’t suffered any major outages itself.
The outage affected the Sui token, SUI, which sharply fell from $3.57 to $3.37 as exchanges such as Upbit announced a temporary suspension of SUI deposits and withdrawals.
The token has since recovered and is, in fact, now trading above pre-crash prices.

All eyes remain on the “Solana killer” as it battles for a market share on par with Solana. Though with a market cap of $10.31 billion, it still has some way to go before it can compete with SOL’s $116.55 billion.
However, in terms of developer activity rankings on Stack, Sui has a developer rating of 99, ranking it in league with Cardano and Ethereum. Meanwhile, Solana scores 88.
