Tap-to-earn viral Telegram game Hamster Kombat has announced that it will be finally launching the HMSTR token on The Open Network (TON) in late September, with the airdrop planned for the same date.
After the initial July 2024 rollout was delayed due to the unexpected popularity of the game, which has more than 300 million players, the team has posted to its social media channels to confirm that the token listing and airdrop will commence on Sept. 26, 2024.
The HMSTER airdrop campaign is supposedly accessible to all those who have played the game. The size of the allocation will vary from player to player as it is based on the user’s engagement and in-game activity.
However, the team announced a “final level” that gamers must hit to qualify for the airdrop, requiring them to accumulate more than 18 billion in-game coins. Players saw this as a bad-faith move, especially after the initial delays.
According to its whitepaper , the game’s developers have allocated 60% of its token airdrop to dedicated players, with the rest being put into market liquidity, expanding ecosystem partnerships, grants, and other areas.
The size and scale of the airdrop quickly got out of hand when the game became insanely popular, which introduced heaps of technical challenges for the team.
The game suffered a pretty significant outage in July, which it attributed to its burgeoning user base, and has also suffered as a result of recent outages on TON.
A similar issue was presented by the DOGS memecoin, which completely overloaded the Telegram network, resulting in validators losing consensus.
This was another unfortunate moment for TON as Telegram proudly boasts of its 900 million users, although it seems unable to handle significant activity levels.
The TON network and TON wallet are vital pieces of infrastructure that allow Hamster Kombat to function and thrive.
However, now that sentiment has turned sour for the Web3 super app, further outages, steep price declines, or even the closure of Telegram itself are on the cards.
Although they seem confident with their current launch date, it would seem that the fate of the blockchain and app it exists on, Telegram and TON, remains uncertain following the arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov.
