Key Takeaways
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Elon Musk has clarified that the United States government has no plans to embrace the popular memecoin, Dogecoin.
The similarity in the name of the meme cryptocurrency and the government efficiency department and the history of memecoin with Musk led many to be hopeful of a potential integration in the future.
Elon Musk clarified that the DOGE government body has nothing to do with crypto, despite a brief website mix-up showing the Dogecoin mascot and sending DOGE up 14% in February.
During the Sunday America PAC town hall in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Musk said:
“There are no plans for the government to use Dogecoin or anything, as far as I know,” Musk said.
Musk revealed he initially planned to name the initiative the “Government Efficiency Commission” but changed it to “Department of Government Efficiency” following public input.
The acronym for the government department he is currently heading matches that of the popular memecoin, highlighting Musk’s love for memes and the original memecoin.
Musk’s love for Dogecoin is well documented on the internet, as he was often credited with pumping the DOGE price during the last bull cycle.
The tech billionaire went on to add Dogecoin payment options for the Tesla website, although they were limited to the merchandise section.
While the February mix-up helped the price of Doge cryptocurrency soar by 14%, Musk’s Sunday clarification had a bearish impact on the memecoin’s price, as it witnessed a 3% decline.
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is tasked with reducing federal spending and streamlining the efficiency of several federal departments.
In his first couple of months of work, Musk has claimed to have identified billions of dollars worth of bogus spending and fired numerous federal employees from various departments.
Although Musk claims to be working hard to eradicate corruption, he has faced criticism for his working style.
In recent months, DOGE has been criticized for several high-profile errors. Last month, as part of more significant cuts at the Energy Department, the Trump administration unintentionally sacked workers involved in the country’s nuclear arsenal. Later, it hurried to hire them again.
The Department of Agriculture dismissed workers involved in the government’s response to the avian flu before trying to rehire them.
Musk also revealed during a public Cabinet meeting last month that DOGE accidentally canceled Ebola prevention before restoring it.
