Stani Kulechov
Stani Kulechov is the founder of Aave, one of the best-known DeFi lending protocols. He helped make crypto lending feel more like a “real product,” where users can lend, borrow, and manage risk through code instead of banks.
In 2025, he stood out for pushing “embedded DeFi,” meaning fintech apps can plug DeFi into normal user experiences.
Kulechov grew up in Finland and taught himself to code young. He later studied law at the University of Helsinki and earned a master’s degree in 2020. While he was in school, he found Ethereum and saw how code could run financial agreements without middlemen.
In 2017, he launched ETHLend, an early DeFi lending project. It was later rebranded to Aave (“ghost” in Finnish) and deployed on Ethereum in January 2020.
In 2025, Kulechov proposed that DeFi should fade into the background. Users should get the benefits (like saving, borrowing, and faster settlement) without needing to understand blockchain details.
He also became a visible voice in the policy conversation. In December 2025, he said an SEC process took major effort and argued DeFi faced unfair regulatory pressure after the SEC did not recommend enforcement action in Aave’s case.
Kulechov’s next year likely depends on whether Aave can keep growing while simplifying risk management. Lending works best when users understand liquidation risk, smart contract risk, and what can go wrong in fast markets.
If “embedded DeFi” takes off, his influence could expand beyond crypto-native users and into mainstream fintech products. If regulators tighten rules again, Aave may need to lean harder into compliant routes like regulated access to stablecoins and bank-linked swaps.
