Key Takeaways
  • Several U.K. lawmakers are expected to attend the “world’s first” educational blockchain course designed for politicians.
  • The three-day course, taking place in April, will teach lawmakers the basics of Web3 and blockchain.
  • It comes as Britain eagerly awaits the finalization of digital asset regulations.

The Polkadot Blockchain Academy is set to hold the “world’s first” educational blockchain course designed for lawmakers — with several U.K. politicians expected to attend.

Set to be held in April, “Blockchain Basics for Policymakers ” aims to provide government officials with the education needed to make informed decisions in the world of Web3.

Blockchain Education for Politicians

The course, which will take place from April 6 to 8, 2025, in Zug, Switzerland, will provide politicians with an intensive course on the fundamentals of blockchain technology.

Dr. Lisa Cameron, the founder of the UKUS Crypto Alliance and an MP from 2015-2024, will lead a group of U.K. lawmakers to attend the event.

The three-day course aims to give attending politicians a better appreciation of blockchain’s technical applications.

“Given the prominent role that blockchain technology is poised to play in the U.K.’s tech sector, it is essential that policymakers are equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions,” Cameron said.

U.K. Awaiting Finalized Crypto Regulation

The course comes at a key time for the U.K., which is currently in a holding pattern regarding the regulation of digital assets.

In October 2023, the U.K. government released a list of in-depth proposals for regulating crypto.

Following the election of Keir Starmer and the Labour Party, former U.K. Treasury Minister Tulip Siddiq said that these proposals still stand.

“We aim to engage firms on draft legal provisions for the crypto asset regime, including stablecoins, as early as possible next year,” she added.

In November, Siddiq told the U.K. Tokenization Summit that although regulatory developments for digital assets in the U.K. “seemed quiet,” the Treasury had “not stopped over recent months.”

“It is clear crypto assets are here to stay,” Siddiq said. “The number of people that own crypto is rising year-on-year, in the U.K. and globally.”

Pauline Cohen Vorms, Co-Founder and CEO at Polkadot Blockchain Academy, said the new course would give policymakers the knowledge they need to “engage with blockchain technology thoughtfully and effectively.”

Historic Lack of Education for Lawmakers

Due to Web3‘s complex nature, many lawmakers have historically lacked the technical background needed to make informed decisions about the technology.

The absence of education could contribute to a regulatory lag in the country and run the risk of rules becoming reactive rather than proactive.

Chrissy Hill, CLO and interim COO at Parity Technologies, who will also be attending the three-day course, said: “Policymakers play a crucial role in shaping the future of blockchain, yet have empirically lacked access to structured education on its technical and regulatory foundations.”

Hill said the program will ensure that “decision-makers have the resources they need to craft practical policies that foster innovation while maintaining safeguards.”

“This program represents a significant step toward greater understanding and collaboration between the blockchain industry and the public sector,” she added.
