Key Takeaways
  • Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is seeking access to the IRS data retrieval system.
  • Democratic lawmakers argue granting access could be illegal.
  • The IRS is targeted for massive job cuts as part of the Trump Administration’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce.

Although meddling by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at many federal agencies has drawn criticism, its attempt to overhaul the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) might be the most controversial yet.

Media reports suggest the White House is pressuring the IRS to grant DOGE unprecedented access to its data and systems. Meanwhile, the tax agency is likely to be one of the biggest targets of government job cuts.

IRS in DOGE Crosshairs

As part of its IRS review, DOGE is reportedly seeking access to the agency’s Integrated Data Retrieval System, which would let members of Musk’s cost-cutting team view tax records.

After the Washington Post reported the news, Democratic lawmakers raised concerns, arguing that granting such access to DOGE would amount to a major privacy violation for millions of taxpayers and may be illegal.

Democrats Allege Privacy Threat

In a letter to Acting IRS Commissioner Douglas O’Donnell, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden demanded details about DOGE’s plans for the IRS.

“No executive order requiring agency heads to provide DOGE personnel access to IRS records or information technology systems supersedes the federal tax code,” the letter stated.

DOGE employees “have no right to hoover up taxpayer data […] and may be breaking the law if they are doing so,” it added.

DOGE ‘Meddling’ Could Delay Tax Refunds

Alongside potential violations of the U.S. tax code and federal privacy law, DOGE’s “meddling” with IRS systems in the middle of tax filing season could delay the issuance of tax refunds, Warren and Wyden claimed.

As they stated in their letter, “Any delay in refunds could be financially devastating to millions of Americans who plan their budgets around timely refunds every spring.”

While Democratic lawmakers are preoccupied with DOGE’s access to IRS systems, the looming threat of mass layoffs at the agency could also threaten its operations.

IRS Layoffs

As part of the Trump Administration’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce, AP reported on Feb.15, that the IRS is targeted for thousands of job cuts.

Employees at other government agencies were offered the chance to quit with a guarantee of eight months of severance pay. However, IRS staff were reportedly excluded from the buyout offer until after the tax filing deadline on April 15.
