Key Takeaways
The debut of ChatGPT in November 2022 marked a significant surge in Google searches for “AI,” outpacing the search frequency for crypto-related terms.
According to Google Trends data, searches for “artificial intelligence (AI)” have surpassed those for “Bitcoin” and “crypto” among Google users this year.
Previously, from 2020, “Bitcoin” and, at times, “crypto” searches had exceeded those for “AI.” However, a shift in this trend began around August 2022.
The interest in “AI” experienced a significant increase in November 2022, coinciding with the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Since then, the gap between AI and crypto-related searches has continued to grow.
The global search interest for “AI” currently holds a Google Trends score of 91, significantly overshadowing Bitcoin’s score of 22. Google Trends assigns scores from 0 to 100, reflecting a topic’s search volume relative to all other topics.
This trend aligns with recent market dynamics, especially considering Bitcoin’s struggle through the latter half of 2021 and much of 2022, attributed to a prolonged bear market cycle. Despite this, Bitcoin has shown resilience, gradually recovering over this year.
Starting the year at $16,900, a stark contrast to its peak of $68,729 on November 11, 2021, Bitcoin has impressively rallied by about 150%, hitting $42,610 at the time of reporting, according to CoinMarketCap .
As per Google Trends, the countries showing the highest interest in Bitcoin are El Salvador, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Brazil, and Switzerland.
Conversely, artificial intelligence experienced a remarkable year, marked by a variety of developments. These included concerns about AI potentially replacing actors , the emergence of AI-generated nude services , and enthusiasm over new chatbots such as ChatGPT, Google Bard, Meta AI, and GrokAI. Notably, GrokAI was introduced by tech billionaire Elon Musk.
Google Trends data indicates a specific surge in AI interest among users in Vietnam, China, the Philippines, and Myanmar, highlighting the global reach and intrigue of AI advancements.
In a December 26 post, a user on X was one of the first to highlight the trend, addressing their 249,900 followers.
A comment on this post suggested that the disparity between AI and crypto in terms of search interest could be attributed to Bitcoin and crypto being relatively older topics. This implies that people might have already extensively researched crypto terms in previous years.
Further emphasizing the growing interest in AI, a July analysis by crypto data aggregator CoinGecko revealed a notable shift in job market interests. The analysis showed that the November 2022 launch of ChatGPT sparked a significant increase in searches for “AI jobs,” which surpassed searches for “crypto jobs” by fourfold.
