In an exclusive interview, CCN’s Andrew Kamsky sat down with Susie Violet Ward (@DecentraSuze ),a leading expert in Bitcoin mining and Head of Mining & Sustainability at BitcoinPolicyUK, at the Bitcoin Atlantis Conference to discuss the current state of Bitcoin mining in the UK and its implications for global innovation trends.

Susie Violet Ward is a prominent figure in the Bitcoin mining community, renowned for her expertise in sustainable mining practices and her advocacy for policy reforms in the cryptocurrency sector.

As the Head of Mining & Sustainability at BitcoinPolicyUK, Ward plays a pivotal role in addressing the energy challenges facing Bitcoin miners in the UK and advocating for regulatory frameworks that promote innovation and sustainability in the industry.

Ward provided candid insights into the challenges hindering Bitcoin mining operations in the UK, particularly the high electricity prices that pose a significant barrier to entry for miners.

Ward’s Take On UK’s Energy Challenges

Ward highlighted the daunting hurdle posed by the UK’s high electricity prices, making Bitcoin mining economically unviable for many. “High electricity prices in the UK pose a significant challenge for Bitcoin mining profitability,” Ward remarked. She emphasized the need for regulatory reforms to address this issue and foster a more conducive environment for mining operations.

She also lamented the lack of awareness and understanding of Bitcoin within the UK government and society, citing it as a major hurdle to the widespread adoption of cryptocurrency mining.

Ward On Global innovation trends

Expressing concerns about potential innovation drain, Ward stressed the importance of regulatory reforms and educational initiatives to sustain growth in the cryptocurrency sector. “I’m concerned about a potential innovation drain from West to East due to regulatory shortcomings,” Ward commented, underscoring the need for proactive measures to stimulate innovation.

Ward’s Advocacy For Methane Mitigation

Ward delved into the promising prospects of methane mitigation in Bitcoin mining, advocating for its role in achieving carbon neutrality or even carbon negativity. “Methane mitigation holds promise for achieving carbon neutrality or negativity in Bitcoin mining,” Ward suggested, highlighting its potential to utilize waste products for generating electricity.

Ward’s Proposals For Mining Efficiency

In a bid to boost mining efficiency, Ward proposed innovative solutions such as harnessing excess heat from miners. “Proposing innovative solutions, such as harnessing excess heat, could boost mining efficiency by up to 30%,” Ward revealed. These initiatives aim to not only enhance operational efficiency but also mitigate environmental impact.
