Michael Saylor

Architect of the Corporate Bitcoin Treasury Model
We are buying. We’re buying quite a lot, actually… We’re always buying.

Michael Saylor

Michael Saylor is the executive chairman and co-founder of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin.

He emerged as one of crypto’s most influential figures by turning a decades-old enterprise software company into the world’s largest leveraged Bitcoin treasury and, in 2025, a self-described “Bitcoin development company.”

Origin and Background

Saylor studied at MIT, graduating with degrees in aeronautics and astronautics and in science, technology, and society, before co-founding MicroStrategy in 1989 as a business-intelligence software firm.

He entered crypto in 2020, after publicly arguing that inflation was destroying the value of the cash in corporate balance sheets.

He pushed for MicroStrategy’s board to adopt Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset. The company began to buy Bitcoin in August 2020 and steadily increased those purchases into 2025, using funding from its Nasdaq listing to invest in the world’s first digital asset.

Major Contributions

  • Pioneered the corporate Bitcoin-treasury playbook, with Strategy holding nearly 3.1% of Bitcoin’s total supply as of November 2025.
  • Rebranded MicroStrategy to “Strategy” in February 2025, framing it as the world’s first dedicated Bitcoin Treasury.
  • His efforts effectively normalized Bitcoin on a public balance sheet, leading other “Bitcoin treasury companies” to mimic its model.

Impact on the Industry (2025)

In 2025, Saylor is a focal point surrounding many of the discussions of corporate Bitcoin investment. Strategy’s balance sheet, net asset value (NAV) premiums, and proof of reserves were common conversations throughout the year. Every Strategy purchase is newsworthy, and Saylor’s approach continues to define how a public company can associate itself with a decentralized digital asset like Bitcoin.

Looking Ahead (2026 and Beyond)

Saylor is positioned to influence the next phase of digital asset treasury strategy as more companies explore Bitcoin-backed structures.

One can credit Saylor for leading the charge here and should keep an eye on Strategy as the company integrates its data management services, such as AI-powered insights, or developments like digital credit, into its Bitcoin holdings.
