Coinbase

From Exchange to On-Chain Platform
At Coinbase, our first priority is to ensure that we operate the most secure and compliant digital currency exchange in the world.

Brian Armstrong, Coinbase CEO

Coinbase is one of the biggest crypto companies in the world. Most people know it as an exchange where you can buy and sell crypto, but in 2025, it stood out as the platform introduced traditional finance features, kept building its Base blockchain, and participated in US policy battles.

Origin and Background

Coinbase was founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. It started with a simple goal: make crypto easier and safer for regular people to use. In April 2021, Coinbase went public through a direct listing on NASDAQ, legitimizing the brand even further while placing crypto closer to traditional markets.

Key Highlights

  • Coinbase retained its position as a top on-ramping platform, meaning a place where people can move from fiat to crypto.
  • The exchange launched Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, to make transactions cheaper and faster for apps.
  • It backed new payment ideas like x402, which aims to let apps and APIs take USDC payments directly over normal web requests.
  • Coinbase’s popularity also brought attention to typical exchange risks, like trading disruptions during high-attention moments.
  • Coinbase kept its compliance and trust branding front and center as it competed with offshore exchanges.

Impact on the Industry (2025)

In 2025, Coinbase’s biggest impact was helping crypto break into the traditional mainstream. One sign of this was Coinbase being listed among the crypto-linked companies included in the S&P 500 in 2025.

It also played a part in the debate over US crypto governance. In February 2025, Coinbase said SEC staff agreed to dismiss the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) case against the company. According to CEO Brian Armstrong, Coinbase was one of the only crypto companies that can “afford” to stand against the SEC.

Looking Ahead (2026 and Beyond)

Coinbase now aims to become more than a crypto exchange. In early 2026, it outlined a plan to build an “everything exchange” that could include crypto, stocks, commodities, and more, while bringing more users on-chain through Base and developer tools.

Its big challenge consists of keeping trust while expanding its offerings. That includes uptime during volatile markets, clear rules for international use, and user safety as everyday users participate in on-chain apps through Base.
