  • Elon Musk has tweeted that bitcoin is not his “safe word.”
  • Taken literally, the tweet suggests Musk likes saying “bitcoin” during sex.
  • Taken figuratively, it suggests Musk has less admiration for bitcoin than previously.

Elon Musk is at it again. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has a reputation as one of Twitter’s most unpredictable and outrageous denizens. Well, now he’s produced what may be his most bizarre tweet yet. Addressing his 30 million-plus followers early Friday, he declared, “Bitcoin is *not* my safe word.”

Elon Musk tweet

Um, what? Bitcoin is not his safe word? Is he serious? Admittedly, it’s hard to tell when it comes to Elon Musk, who has said many, many strange things through Twitter, even once going so far as to tweet that Dogecoin is his favorite cryptocurrency. But let’s take what he said at face value, starting with the meaning of the term “safe word.”

So, for those who aren’t familiar with sadomasochism (S&M), a “safe word” is used by sexual partners during rough sex play. When one of them feels that things are just getting a little too rough, he or she repeats whatever had been chosen beforehand as their safe word, thereby ending their activity.

According to Cosmopolitan , such a safe word could be anything from “ice cream” to “Dumbeldore” or “Nickelback.”

Bitcoin Is Sexy

But not “bitcoin,” if you happen to be Elon Musk. Does this mean that Musk actually doesn’t like bitcoin, despite having said good things about the cryptocurrency in the past? On the contrary, it suggests that he not only likes bitcoin, but that it turns him on.

In other words, he doesn’t want “bitcoin” to be his safe word, because he wants to say, shout and scream it in bed. Obviously, the word and its meaning is deeply arousing to him. So arousing, in fact, that he wouldn’t dare use it as a safe word, because that would immediately put an end to whatever kinky weirdness he was engaged in at the time.

Indeed, we could go even further and suggest that Musk depends on bitcoin to maintain arousal. Just the abstract concept of a decentralized monetary system is enough to keep him going for hours. So whereas some men might open a box of Viagra, Musk simply pictures Satoshi Nakamoto and Merkle trees.

Bitcoin Isn’t Sexy Anymore

Okay, so this might be going too far down the rabbit hole. Maybe Elon Musk is turned on by bitcoin. Or maybe, his latest tweet simply suggests that his former appreciation for the cryptocurrency has waned.

In the past, Musk has described bitcoin as “quite brilliant.”  He’s even had his Twitter account suspended for half-jokingly urging one of his followers to buy the cryptocurrency.

However, in April he tweeted, “Cryptocurrency is my safe word.” Assuming that he was sincerely praising crypto with this tweet, today’s sequel may indicate that he thinks bitcoin isn’t as ‘safe’ as certain other cryptocurrencies. This might not be massively surprising, since he has previously drawn attention to its reported environmental cost .

But then again, who really knows with Elon Musk. The entrepreneur has said many mysterious things via Twitter. He has also said many things he’s later regretted . So regardless of whether his latest tweet is about finding bitcoin sexy or not, it may end up being one more entry to add to an already long list.
