It’s official: the Xbox Games Showcase will be taking place on July 23, 2020. The event will start with a pre-show segment hosted by Geoff Keighley at 8 am PT, while the reveals and announcements will begin at 9 am PT.
The event’s announcement tweet didn’t confirm what will be revealed. Fans feel that anything will be better than the hugely disappointing Xbox Series X gameplay reveal event held in May. That event was mostly devoid of any real gameplay, as publishers like Ubisoft chose to show CGI trailers for their games. The trailers didn’t show what the games look like on the Xbox Series X.
This was a stark contrast to the PS5 reveal event in June. Sony’s equivalent event featured games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, and weird indie title Bugsnax. It was an eclectic mix for sure, but each trailer had real PS5 gameplay. It meant that what viewers saw is representative of the PS5 playing experience.
This is what the Xbox team will need to deliver at the Xbox Games Showcase. All the talk about the powerful Xbox Series X specs will need to be converted into some exceptional gameplay.
Positively, rumors suggest that this gameplay will be on-hand from first-party Xbox game developers. 343 Industries will be offering a look at Xbox Series X launch title Halo Infinite. Obsidian Entertainment, famous for developing RPGs such as Fallout: New Vegas, may have something to share at the event.
Another confirmed developer is The Initiative, the secretive Xbox studio that hasn’t released a game since it was created in 2018. The team has superstar game development talent that has worked on series like Battlefield, Uncharted, and The Last of Us.
There could be a few surprises, too, as some of the 15 Xbox game developers have done an excellent job of keeping their games a secret. Fans will want big announcements, though, if they are to think about buying an Xbox Series X.
