Since announcing their Digital Currency Initiative in 2013, the University of Nicosia (UNic) has been hard at work forming the world’s first Master’s in Digital Currency Degree Program.  This MSc in Digital Currency is undoubtedly the first of many such programs to be offered by educational institutions worldwide.  In order to present this opportunity to as many digital currency enthusiasts as possible, UNic had promised to offer the first course for free.  The course, titled: “Introduction to Digital Currencies,” and the entire program will both by offered by the University via distance learning.  Today, Antonis Polemitis took to Reddit to announce that the free introductory course is now open for registration.

The official syllabus of the course can be found here.

As promised since the inception of the program, the first course in the new MSc in Digital Currency program will be available to any and all interested participants.  The University of Nicosia has today opened up registration for this ground breaking course.  There are no prerequisite courses or even degrees, and anyone with an internet connection come May will be able to attend “Introduction to Digital Currencies.”  The course will be offered in a Massive, Open, Online, Course (MOOC) format so interested parties will not have to relocate to Nicosia to attend.  The language of instruction for this course and the entire MSc in Digital Currency program is English.

Andreas Antonopoulos has joined the University of Nicosia as a Teaching Fellow and has been helping plan the curriculum for the MSc in Digital Currency.  Along with Antonis Polemitis and Dmitry Apraksin, Antonopoulos will be teaching the Introduction to Digital Currencies course to potentially (hopefully) thousands of students around the world.  For those that are interested in the MSc in Digital Currency beyond the “Introduction to Digital Currencies” course, you can see the semester breakdown here.

To register in this course, simply click this link and fill out your information.  Your programme of choice is the Free MOOC.

After registering you will receive a confirmation email.

University Of Nicosia: University Of Bitcoin

A Wall Street Journal article from around the time of the University of Nicosia’s first announcement of their Digital Currency Initiative referred to the University, jokingly, as the “University of Bitcoin.”  Shortly after the University revealed their commitment to Digital Currencies in 2013, African student Francois Rossouw became the first student in history to pay tuition using Bitcoin, via BitPay.  Of course, the University also accepts Bitcoin payments for their MSc in Digital Currency program and has also received their first Bitcoin tuition payment towards the MSc programme.  Digital Currency used to pay for a degree about Digital Currency… Sure seems like the start of a complete economy to me!
