Less than two days on from Epic Games’ dazzling Unreal Engine 5 demo, an enterprising fan has already conjured up a pretty convincing replica in PlayStation 4 exclusive game creation sandbox, Dreams.
The sheer scale and breadth of Epic’s achievement mean the Dreams version is limited to the opening scene of the tech demo, but it’s nevertheless impressive and hints at how versatile Dreams can be for budding game creators.
Created by artist Martin Nebelong, who, incidentally, works freelance for Dreams developer Media molecule, the scene unmistakably mimics the now-iconic rocky canyon that introduces Epic’s demo. Nebelong says they spent two hours sculpting the scenes in dreams yesterday evening.
A two hour sculpt from this evening. I was completely in shock over the coolness of the UE5 reveal, so I wanted to make this tribute in Dreams.
It’s not a perfect match, though, but still impressive for a piece of software running on a seven-year-old PlayStation 4 rather than the beefy next-gen hardware of the PlayStation 5.
Sunlight beams through a crevice in the ceiling, rocks bounce down jagged walls, and stalactites drape down from the cavern’s roof. Seen from a distance or glanced over rapidly, Nebelong’s work could pass off as the real deal. Not bad for an evening’s work.
Seeing this should fuel demand for a PlayStation 5 port of Dreams. With Sony and Media Molecule’s plan to improve and expand Dreams for at least the next decade, the chances of a PS5 version are high. If someone can achieve such a feat on older hardware in under two-hours, then we can only imagine what could be possible on PS5.
Rather fittingly, Brian Karis, the mastermind behind the tech demo and a technical director at Epic Games, revealed that Dreams inspired some of the tech underpinning Unreal Engine 5.
