  • Nintendo is getting its own area at Universal Studios Japan.
  • The new park, called Super Nintendo World, has a trailer featuring Charlie XCX and Galantis.
  • While the trailer starts out pretty standardly, it turns into a hellish nightmare before too long.

The news is out. Nintendo is getting its own section at Universal Studios Japan. Obviously, that is great news. It’s great because video games are breaking more and more into the real world. What is less great in many ways is the Super Nintendo World trailer. Not that it’s bad, it’s just sort of insane.

If you haven’t seen it yet it starts out as a pretty standard Nintendo trailer. It has people of all races, genders, and nationalities playing Nintendo games. As they all hang out, they’re interrupted by a warp pipe showing up. Because they’re clearly mental, they all decide to jump into them. That’s when things get really bad.

Super Nintendo World Looks Scary in the Trailer

First of all, let me just say that the music in this trailer is great. Not necessarily something I’d choose to listen to for the sake of it. But, it does a good job of selling the upbeat tone of the theme park. Galantis and Charlie XCX have done a decent job. It’s the visuals that really make this terrifying.

It’s all fine when they first arrive in this magical land. Everyone gets a free hat and watch. Mario is running around all over the place. There are even blocks that spit out magic stars. Fantastic. Then you have to enter a long dark tunnel.

In the tunnel, giant spikey monsters will try to drop on you. If they succeed you’ll surely be crushed to death. In the video, all the people running for their lives seem pretty cheerful about it. Then again, we never get to see the groups of people further back who are presumably smashed into a fine paste.

At Least The Concept is Exciting

Strange homicidal video aside, the idea is great. A Nintendo theme park with games taking place through special watches? Sign me up. I just have to figure out how to get to Japan first. That is unless it’s really successful. If that happens we might see this crop up in Universal Studios Florida.

In many ways though, it is what they don’t show which is more concerning. While Mario is all over the place, from Kart to Land, he is very much alone. None of Nintendo’s other big IPs make a showing at all. Not even Link who is probably second only to Mario in his popularity.

It sort of makes you wonder why they went with ‘Super Nintendo World’. If this trailer is accurate as to what goes on there, it’s mainly just a Mario thing. Not that there’s anything wrong with Mario. He’s just the blandest IP that Nintendo has. At least we know that Charlie XCX is Toad’s best friend now.
