Batman vs. Mermaids? Is this what the macabre mastermind behind “The Witch” director Robert Eggers plans to bring our way once his new nightmare “The Lighthouse” hits this October?
It sure looks that way from the recently released trailer which features new Batman Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe battling insanity and the elements while watching over an isolated lighthouse back in the 1800s.
While filled to the brim with insane images, such as Robert Pattinson attacking (or being attacked) by an octopus inside the titular Lighthouse, the trailer gives us little to go on as far as the actual plot of the film. Other than, you know, “Pattinson and Dafoe go crazy at a lighthouse.”
That said, the recently released poster gives us one heck of a hint. You see, down at the bottom left corner of the poster, right in the middle of the stormy seas, there seems to be a mermaid tail poking up out of the raging waters!
Plus, the poster’s tagline reads that “There is Enchantment in the Light.” So I guess that means we’re in for some magical times as well as terror in this flick. Good to know!
And if the addition of a mermaid onto this “horror movie” poster seems to be out of left-field, Eggers also appears to have decided it was a good idea to film this new nautical nightmare in black and white. And in an outdated aspect ratio of 4:3.
Exciting choices to be sure, and as a student of film, I can’t help but be intrigued. But what will everyday audiences stumbling in off the street make of these presentation choices? I guess we’ll have to wait and see once “The Lighthouse” runs aground on October 18.
