The Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally found its She-Hulk. Tatiana Maslany has been announced to play the superhero in the Disney+ series expected to debut in 2022. Her confirmation has been met with minor controversy; however, as rumored contender Alison Brie’s fans have taken issue.
She-Hulk might not have the same split personality issues as The Hulk, but the role will need a nuance between her human and She-Hulk form. MCU’s Hulk actor, Mark Ruffalo, has already taken to Twitter to congratulate his “cousin.”
For those aware of the actress’s most famous role on “Orphan Black,” the news comes as no surprise. Maslany portrayed not one, but around a dozen versions of the same character. The show’s premise has the main protagonist discovering she’s one of hundreds of clones , naturally requiring her to perform as some of them.
“Orphan Black” was a success, running from 2013 to 2017, and Tatiana Maslany bagged the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 2016. Her win made her the first Canadian actor to score a victory in the Emmys’ drama category.
Alison Brie had been rumored to be up for the role shortly before the official announcement. This was enough to get fans rallying by her side, who are now triggered when the rumors have fallen flat. Even worse is that Brie’s fans have taken to criticizing Disney’s decision as “woke” pandering.
This kind of toxic hatred was similarly seen when “Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson had faced criticism over her perceived man-hating comments. While Larson’s situation was justified to some extent, seeing as she did have some issues with the cast , Tatiana Maslany doesn’t deserve this kind of backlash.
Let’s face it, Alison Brie fans, the actress is mainly known for comedic roles. Tatiana Maslany has shown a wider range and is a seasoned performer in theatre with roles in “Oliver!”, “The Secret Garden” and “Network.”
The superhero genre has been increasing its number of female-led films and TV shows as of late. Tatiana Maslany will bring attention to the television landscape as one of the first female characters to lead a Disney+ series.
Representation has been a hot topic in recent years, something that has been a proven success, with “Captain Marvel,” scoring big at the box office . With an award-winning actress the caliber of Tatiana Maslany, “She-Hulk” has been given a boost.
It’s too bad that sour fans are using political correctness as an excuse for unwarranted hatred.
