The Steam Winter Sale is now live .
Almost like clockwork, the Steam web site and client ground to a stuttering halt at 10 am PT/ 6 pm GMT as millions stormed into to skim through the countless discounts cooked up for the occasion.
The lucky ones were able to navigate the site painfully slowly in an experience that felt more like trying to load an image-heavy GeoCities-hosted site with a 56k modem in the 90s. Most were met with a ‘502 Bad Gateway’ error as the servers failed to handle the demand.
Things are a little more stable now. Aside from the actual deals, Steam has, as usual, cooked up a rather lackluster packet of features for what it’s calling the Steamville Holiday Event .
The main gist is that money spent transforms into Festivity Tokens through the magic of yuletide. Said tokens can then be spent on chat stickers and effects, festive Steam profile designs and backgrounds, emoticons, badges, and, more interestingly, a Winter Sale coupon.
There’s a bit of a catch, though. To pick up the $5 voucher, you need 5,000 tokens, and you receive one 100 tokens per $1 spent. All in all, you’d need to fork out $50 to get $5 off. In comparison, the Epic Games Store is handing out a $10 coupon just for logging in to the client.
Festivity Tokens can also be earned through completing quests, but true to form, that portion of the Steam site is down, so we’re in the dark about what those quests entail.
Here’s a roundup of the best deals in the Steam Winter Sale.
Dark Souls III is 75% off at $15. Keeping with From Software, Steam has slashed 35% off Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice ; it’s now $39.
Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is selling for 17% off or $50. Red Dead Redemption 2 is discounted 20%; nab it for about $48.
Leaving the big-name titles, Hollow Knight is less than $8, and Stardew Valley less than $9. Disco Elysium benefits from 20% off and can be yours for just shy of $32.
