Even if you’re an ardent gamer, there’s a solid chance you’ve never heard of Roblox . Yet this 13-year-old title just hit the significant milestone of 100 million worldwide monthly users, according  to a post on the title’s blog published on Friday.

Unlike Fortnite, which has almost become a household name, Roblox rarely gets mentioned other than in gaming circles, yet remains decidedly popular among its devoted fan base.

A Creative and Collaborative Library of Immersive Worlds

Launched in August 2006, Roblox is a multiplayer online sandbox that allows players to explore a massive selection of creator-generated 3D worlds and play mini-games with a strong emphasis on social interaction. Through a system of avatars, players invite friends to delve into these immersive worlds and share experiences.

Borrowing heavily from the simple Lego-inspired idea of giving users the tools to create, players can flex their creative muscles with a near-infinite number of possibilities.

The over 69 million  worlds, games, and experiences on offer are as varied as the community of players is diverse. Roblox boasts  an unusually high percentage of female players – estimated at 40% – while players hail from over 200 countries.

CEO David Baszucki said of the milestone:

It’s thrilling to see how far we’ve come since those early days at Roblox. Our future is brighter than ever. We look forward to continuing to innovate and deliver fun features for the entire global Roblox community as we embark on this journey together. From everyone at Roblox, thanks again.

To mark the occasion, Roblox corporation is gifting  players a free limited-time exclusive Goldrow shoulder accessory for their avatar.

Roblox Trumps Minecraft’s Monthly Player Count

Other creative child-friendly games such as Minecraft overshadow Roblox, which may explain its relative obscurity in mainstream culture. Even within the gaming community, Roblox remains somewhat of an oddity due to its aging graphics and the fact it is marketed towards children.

More often than not, it is the target of memes rather than taken as a serious rival to other massively popular titles. Kanye West even released a music video last year where the rapper parodied the game by adopting an avatar’s classic blocky appearance.

Regardless of this relative anonymity, Roblox ranks among the most popular games in the world, surpassing Minecraft’s 91 million monthly players according to statistics from an announcement  made by Microsoft back in March.

Minecraft’s recent resurgence, thanks in part to renewed interest from prominent members of the YouTube community including PewDiePie and CinnamonToastKen, and the similar creative premise of both games, may have helped to rekindle interest and push players to flock back to Roblox.
