Pre-Ordered a PS5? Amazon Still Won’t Promise Launch Day Delivery

The demand for PS5 is so high that even those with confirmed pre-orders may not receive the console on launch day.
According to several social media reports from people lucky enough to have landed a pre-order with Amazon in the US, the retail giant has sent an email warning that ‘high demand’ may derail plans to ship units in time for release day. It reads:
“We’re contacting you about your order of PlayStation Console to let you know in advance that you may not receive this item on the day it is released due to high demand. We’ll make every effort to the item to you as soon as possible once released.”
Whether this is an issue that is exclusive to Amazon or may spread to other outlets offering pre-orders such as Target, GameStop, and Best Buy is unclear.
Sony’s Botched PS5 Pre-Order Launch
The news comes off the back of a less than ideal PS5 pre-order launch. Last Wednesday, numerous retailers jumped the gun, making pre-orders available early, despite Sony advising that pre-orders would go live the next day , triggering a mad scramble among prospective buyers.
Most retailers sold out within minutes, forcing many to turn to third-party alternatives such as auction sites with inflated prices surging into the thousands of dollars.
Over the weekend, Sony candidly acknowledged mishandling the launch , noting on Twitter:
“Let’s be honest: PS5 pre-orders could have been a lot smoother. We truly apologize for that. Over the next few days, we will release more PS5 consoles for pre-order – retailers will share more details. And more PS5s will be available through the end of the year.”
Reports last week claimed production woes had axed the PS5 manufacturing target by 4 million units for the fiscal year ending in March 2021. Sony quickly refuted the report.
While pre-order customers may be in for a shock come release day, those that missed out are likely in for an even longer wait to get their hands on a PS5.
