Poor Jerry Jones Is Losing It Over Cowboys’ Descent Into Mediocrity

- The Cowboys entered the season as a team many believed to have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl.
- But the team’s wildly inconsistent play and coaching blunders have them with a sub-.500 record with less than a month left in the regular season.
- After the team’s third consecutive loss, he remains steadfast in his public support of Jason Garret, but the pressure may finally be getting to Jerry Jones.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is not a young man. He is an insanely rich man, so he is probably living as comfortable as a 77-year old man can. While owning America’s Team has likely enhanced his wealth a great deal, it hasn’t been all sunshine and roses for him.
He was hated and vilified for firing the team’s only head coach, Tom Landry. People eventually forgave him (or chose to move on) and realized he made the tough decision that needed to be made. It didn’t take long at all for Landry’s predecessor, Jimmy Johnson, to win a couple of Super Bowls.
But then Jerry did it again. He chased Johnson out of town and has been busy trying to fix the team ever since. That was over 25 years ago. For a quarter of a century, he has been busy insisting he’s right and turning the once-proud franchise into the picture of mediocrity.
With his team’s latest loss, a 31-24 debacle that was much worse than the score indicates, he may be realizing that once again, he has gotten it wrong. In true Jerry Jones fashion, rather than admit his mistakes and start anew, he is sticking to his guns.
But this time, it appears to be getting to him.
Jerry Jones Loses His Cool During a Local Radio Program
It was easy to see that Jones was upset following the loss to the New England Patriots. When the Cowboys fell to the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving—ditto. So, when they lost in terrible fashion once again Thursday night to the Bears?
Well, it couldn’t have been good. So, it might have been a good day to skip his weekly interview, but ever the professional Jones soldiered on. It didn’t take long for him to snap and for things to get far from professional:
His call cut out but not because the station hung up on him. According to reports, the station has a system that drops phone calls when someone curses. Jones did call back in and finish the interview.
But it was a fair question that set him off. As for the attitude—was the DJ too upbeat for Jones? But then to follow it up by cursing on-air? Jerry, Jerry, Jerry. You know better than to do that!
Maybe the stress is getting to him finally. Perhaps he realizes what he has in Jason Garrett—a guy that thought the team played fine or tried to do too much during parts of Thursday night’s game.
When? During warm-ups?
Relief May Be in Sight
If the Cowboys don’t win a game soon, we may see Jerry Jones crack worse than Jason Witten did on the sideline Thursday night. But fans need not worry because relief may finally be in sight. No, not in the form of an easy win (the Rams offense exploded last week).
Jerry may finally be ready to pull the trigger. When asked about the future, all he could say was guys would still have a job next week.
So, does this mean that if/when Jared Goff throws for 400+ yards and hangs 40+ points on the ‘Boys while shutting out the Dallas offense, Garrett will be gone?
Fans can only hope.
